Employee recognized
Tim Cooley, the East County Water Control District’s lead heavy equipment operator, was awarded Employee of the Month. Cooley has been employed by the district since December 2007. He was nominated for completing several very difficult culvert projects this year and also for overseeing the construction of two new structures in Greenbriar. During the projects, Cooley had between two to four crew members under his guidance. He performed his own material ordering and presented management with daily reports.
LCEC honored as Fit-Friendly Worksite
For the second year in a row, LCEC was honored through the American Heart Association Fit-Friendly Worksite program.
LCEC was recognized at the gold level, which means that the company: offers employees physical activity at the worksite, has increased number of healthy eating options available to employees, promotes a wellness culture onsite and embraces at least nine criteria outlined by the American Heart Association in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and culture.
As a Fit-Friendly Worksite, LCEC is considered a corporate trailblazer who has adopted the spirit of the initiative and has the vision to improve the health and wellness of employees and their families.
Airport recognized for safety efforts by FAA
The Federal Aviation Administration Southern Region Airports Division honored Southwest Florida International Airport with its 2013 Air Carrier Airport Safety Award.
The award is given annually to a commercial airport that has taken actions, instituted programs or otherwise operated in a manner deserving of special recognition for improving airport safety.
Some of the 2013 initiatives to promote and improve airport safety included the Apron Expansion and Taxiway Project, which enhanced aircraft safety and increased airfield capacity; the Wildlife Remediation Project, which mitigated high-risk areas near the active airfield; and a focus on Runway Safety including the relocation of the Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Station, stringent controls on airfield and movement area driving privileges and proactively working with FAA to develop strong programs for the Runway Safety Action Team.
“The Lee County Port Authority is dedicated to safe daily operations through education and awareness,” Robert M. Ball, executive director of the Lee County Port Authority, said. “We have created a culture that encourages our employees to identify and report safety-related hazards, which in turn ensures Southwest Florida International Airport meets or exceeds the safety requirements and standards set forth by the FAA.”
The FAA’s Southern Region Airports Division manages airport planning, environmental, compliance, design and safety for eight southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Southwest Florida International Airport served more than 7.6 million passengers in 2013 and is one of the top 50 U.S. airports for passenger traffic.

The Horizon Foundation, which supports the efforts of the Horizon Council and Lee County Economic Development Office, is just shy of breaking its fundraising goal.
Having raised $387,545 to date, it has just $12,455 less than the goal set forth for the year and is asking for Lee County business and community support.
Last year, the foundation raised a record $385,000, which was $35,000 more than the goal. It set the goal for fundraising in 2014 even higher at $400,000.
The fundraising ends on Sept. 19 at the 23rd Annual Industry Appreciation Week luncheon, which will be held at the Harborside Event Center.
The majority of the fundraising goes directly to support the marketing and business assistance objectives of the Lee County Economic Development Office program.
