Deputy recognized for arrest of suspect in car theft cases

Brian Rhoton
Lt. Paul Cummings, the second in command of the East Zone, Lehigh Acres Sheriff’s Substation on Homestead Road., said one of his deputies was unable to be at the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon where members of law enforcement are commended for their outstanding work in the community.
“Deputy Brian Rhoton, for whom this award is to be presented, couldn’t be with us today because he worked all last night and is home asleep,” Cummings said.
Rhoton was being recognized as the Lee County Sheriff’s officer of the Month for August 2014. The luncheon meeting was held on Aug. 26 at The Hut restaurant.
Hosting the luncheon was Inke Baker, the CEO and president of the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce.
Lt. Cummings said that on this past July, at around 4:45 a.m., Deputy Brian Rhoton responded to a suspicious person call in the 2500 block of 12th St. SW.

MEL TOADVINE Lt. Paul Cummings, second in command at the Lehigh East Side Sheriff’s Office in Lehigh, reads a proclamation honoring a deputy for his work in solving a case involving vehicle burglaries and theft.
“The nature of the complaint was that an unknown Hispanic male was looking into vehicles that did not belong to him. While responding to the area Deputy Rhoton observed a vehicle ‘black out’ in a driveway on 11th St. SW. Deputy Rhoton approached the vehicle and observed a Hispanic male who matched the description of the suspicious person exiting the vehicle. The individual refused to comply with Deputy Rhoton’s commands to stop and was subsequently detained by Deputy Rhoton.
“Upon detaining the individual, Deputy Rhoton conducted a preliminary investigation that revealed that the vehicle was stolen. Deputy Rhoton further found the individual to be in possession of items that potentially had recently been stolen from vehicles in the area,” Cummings said.
Due to the nature of the event Detectives were called to the scene and took over the investigation. Subsequently the individual admitted to looking into vehicles and stealing the vehicle, Cummings said. The suspect was arrested with charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle.
Cummings went on to say ‘that Rhoton’s vigilance and persistence resulted in this criminal being taken off the streets of Lehigh Acres. “Deputy Rhoton is commended for his dedication to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and to the citizens of Lehigh Acres,” Cummings said.
The chamber also recognizes employees of the month for special recognition.
If you know of an employee of a local business who has gone of his or her way to make the job better, contact Inke Baker to nominate that employee.
The next meeting of the Greater Lehigh Chamber of Commerce will be held Sept. 30, the last Tuesday of the month at The Hut restaurant on Buckingham Road.
