Help build a greenhouse by running, walking in Sept.13 Mirror Lakes event

Joe Pearson
The success of Healthy Harvest Community Farms on the edge of the Mirror Lakes Golf Course and club, its director, Joe Pearson has decided to expand to a location site at 2736 Edison Ave. in Fort Myers, but he says he needs the community’s help in making it happen.
And there are plans for a run/walk to start at 8 a.m. on Sept. 13 at the Mirror Lakes Golf Club to help build a greenhouse. Both runners and walkers should sign up now.
Healthy Harvest Community Farms has been producing food for Lehigh Acres Community Services and others and now Pearson wants to expand it to help feed those who need food in the Fort Myers area and also to sell it to the public, bringing money back to Lehigh to help build a large greenhouse so Pearson and others in the community who are also involved with the Mirror Lakes gardens can continue the program.
“With a greenhouse at the Mirror Lakes site, we can grow produce all year round, even if there is frost on the outside,” he said.
Pearson also said the Department of Agriculture and the State of Florida has provided Healthy Harvest Farms with more than an acre of organic land to continue their growth throughout the state.

And if all works out, Pearson said he has his eyes next on Naples, where produce can be sold to help people in the area.
But to get started in Fort Myers, Pearson says money is needed to help provide a well, garden materials, and to launch the site.
“Once our goal is reached we will move to our Naples location and proceed to help the food banks there as well,” he said.
Pearson says he has been told that this is the only “farming operation” of its type in Florida.
“A donation is a simple to give; the money will open our Fort Myers location where our organically grown food can be sold. The profits come back and expand our Lehigh operation at Mirror lakes Golf Club to produce even more farming which means more jobs,” Pearson said.

He noted that the expanded harvest then goes back to the communities’ food banks at the satellite locations, Fort Myers and Naples.
“The sooner we get Fort Myers going, the sooner we can launch the Naples location. This has become a passion of mine and of David Deetscreek, also of Lehigh, to grow across the state while improving the conditions of those who eat the produce.
“A fundraiser will be held on Sept. 13 to promote health and fitness in our wonderful local community of Lehigh Acres.
“We’re having a fun 4K run and walk to raise money for a greenhouse we plan to build at the Mirror Lakes garden site. This is for the inexperienced as well as the experienced. All ages are welcome to participate while helping a great cause in our community. Everyone who pre-registers gets a free T-shirt showing their support for the day
Pearson says residents who believe this is a good way to help people, may donate any small or large amount online at: wwwgofundme.com/db7xko.

MEL TOADVINE Are these okras? Pearson says they are and are ready to pick.
“We appreciate any amount and if you can’t give, I ask at least that people share with their friends what we are doing.
“We want to get the word out as we have some great and exciting things coming up in the near future and look forward to sharing with you more as they approach,” Pearson said.

Pearson said they have been holding free boot camps weekly to help people get in shape for the event. He also noted that sponsors are still needed for those who believe in the cause. Call Pearson at 239-938-4613.
Pearson said the free boot camps are being held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 7 p.m., and again on Saturday morning from 7:30 to 8:30.
