Members of the Rotary Club of Lehigh Acres gathered recently to put labels inside the front covers of nearly 1,700 thesauruses that will be given away to all fourth grad students who attend the seven elementary schools in Lehigh, Alva and Gateway.

A spokesman with the Rotary Club said elementary school students benefit from learning thesaurus skills when they are ass singed to write essays, stories and research papers.

The thesaurus should be placed with the dictionary they received in the third grade, said Jack Vealey of the Rotary in Lehigh.

“Taking both to school in their backpacks and using according to the teachers’ instructions. These books belong to the students, Vealey said, from the time they received them to use throughout their school career.

Vealey said that if your fourth grade student attends one of the following schools, they may expect their very own thesaurus probably this month. They include Veterans Park Academy for the Arts, G. Weaver Hipps, Harns Marsh, Lehigh, Mirror Lakes, Sunshine, and Tortuga Preserve Elementary Schools located in Lehigh.

Also included are fourth graders who go to the Alva School and to the Gateway Elementary schools.

“We are able to do this community project and others because of the tremendous support we received from the community of Lehigh Acres at our fundraising events. Our next event will be a Rock, Blues & Brews Fest, to be held Saturday, Nov. 1 at Copperhead Golf Club, Vealey said.

The Rotary Club of Lehigh Acres began a project several years ago to giving away free dictionaries to area elementary schools. The idea caught on and other Rotary clubs in Southwest Florida have picked up the project.
