District students named as semifinalists in program
Officials with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 1.4 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of entrants.
The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.
Of this year’s semifinalists, the following are local students from the School District of Lee County:
– Christian Dimaculangan of Lehigh Senior High School
Approximately 15,000 students are expected to advance to the finalist level, allowing them to compete for one of 2,500 scholarships worth $2,500 that will be awarded on a state-representational basis.
Students who receive a scholarship will also earn the prestigious designation of National Merit Scholar and will be eligible for additional financial aid from many colleges and universities.
