Thief steals, pawns glasses days after getting out of jail

By Staff | Sep 17, 2014

Demetria Gray

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help tracking down a repeat offender who just got out of the Lee County Jail after three and a half months of incarceration, and already she’s wanted once again this time for stealing more than $1,800 in sunglasses.

Detectives say that on August 23rd, Demetria Gray, DOB 6/6/86, went to the Sunglass Hut, located at Tanger Outlets in Fort Myers, and heisted 13 pairs of Ray Ban sunglasses, valued at $1,824. Two days later, she went to Larrys Pawn Shop East on Palm Beach Boulevard, pawning 12 pairs of the sunglasses, using her driver license as ID, apparently keeping one pair of shades for herself. Since Gray had to present identification to conduct the transaction, detectives were quickly able to pin Gray down as their prime suspect. Records indicate that Gray had only been out of jail for three days before committing the theft at the Sunglass Hut, after serving a three and a half month stint for other felony charges.

Over the years, Gray has made repeat appearances at the Lee County Jail, having been booked 28 times as an adult on a massive 84 separate charges. She is a criminal registrant whose rap sheet is riddled with a long list of thefts, fraud, shoplifting, escape, trespassing, resisting officers, probation violations and times when she just chose to not show up for court appearances. She also has an arrest record in Hillsborough County.

“Demetria Gray is the epitome of a career criminal,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator. “All this woman knows how to do is steal which she does repeatedly with the same result every time getting arrested. The irony in this particular case is that despite all of her previous criminal encounters, she hasn’t figured out that when you pawn stolen goods, it’s just a matter of time before we figure out who you are.”

Gray was last known to be living in Lehigh Acres, but also has connections in Dunbar and Tice. Upon her arrest, she will be charged with grand theft, dealing in stolen property and providing false information to a pawn broker.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Demetria Gray is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000. Tips may also be made online at www.swflcrimestoppers.org or by texting a tip to CRIMES (274637) Keyword: REWARD.
