Lehigh’s ‘new’ Publix planning Oct. 16 grand opening

The date of the much anticipated opening of the new larger Publix supermarket at 1324 in downtown Lehigh Acres has been determined and according to Brian West, a Publix media spokesperson, the grand opening day is Thursday, Oct. 16.
“That’s the day that we’re pretty sure of as of now,” West said from Publix’s media offices in the Lakeland, Fla., area.
The finishing touches have been put on the exterior of the building and it has been enlarged and much of the exterior of the shopping complex on Homestead Road has received a fresh paint job, too.
The Publix supermarket is all new. The former building, which had been in Lehigh for at least two decades plus at that location, was demolished to make room for an even larger supermarket, this time including a pharmacy. West said he was not sure how long the old Publix had been in Lehigh.
“We’re stocking shelves there as we speak,” West said today. “It won’t take long to get that store up and going. One of the new additions is a pharmacy at this new Publix,” he said.
There is another Publix supermarket on the outskirts of Lehigh at the Crossroads Intersection of SR82 and Lee Boulevard. Many customers of the downtown store had shopped there while many others have gone to other markets in Lehigh including Winn-Dixie, which is nearby. In fact, Winn-Dixie opened up a second store a few months ago, taking over Sweet Bay supermarket on Leeland Heights and Bell Boulevard. There is also a Walmart Supermarket on Lee Boulevard, across from the St. Raphael’s Catholic Church.
All the other supermarkets and some smaller stores have reported their business has been good while the new Publix supermarket was being built
The much larger supermarket is located next to the World Gym, easy enough to spot. The shopping center has come to be called the Publix Shopping Center. It is in the middle of a long strip center that includes several other businesses including a couple of eateries, a flower shop and other retail businesses.
Brian West, the Publix corporate spokesman, said construction began in March of this year on the new store, following the complete demolition of the old building.
A large fence was placed around the parking lot in front of the old Publix supermarket for workers and to store building supplies and blocks for the all new Public market. It was also put there for safety reasons to keep curious onlookers away from workers.
It is expected to be one of the newest stores in the popular supermarket chain throughout Florida.
Some of the employees went to the Public supermarket at Crossroads Shopping Center at the edge of Lehigh during the construction of the new store and are expected to return.
As the opening date gets closer, Publix will announce in its advertising grand opening activities and specials at the new market place.
