Alligator attack cited in man’s death
An autopsy by the Lee County Medical Examiner’s Office on a 92-year-old Lehigh Acres man has concluded that he died of injuries consistent with being bitten or attacked by an alligator.
In what matter the contact with the alligator was made is not known.
On Oct. 13, deputies responded to a call at 12448 Graham Circle in Lehigh after there had been a report that witnesses had seen a nude and partial body in the canal behind their homes.
The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Detective force began a death investigation.
Detectives said the man found dead was identified as Hurbert Loyke of 1442 Graham Circle in Lehigh and had been found deceased and floating not far from where he had lived.
Friends in the area said alligators are often seen in the canal in which Loyke was found. They had gone out to feed the ducks and found the body.
It was also reported that the limbs of the man had been bitten off by the alligator attack.
It is not known, according to investigators, how Loyke ended up in the water. An investigation has not shown whether he fell or slipped or what may have actually happened. Neighbors said he was a seasonal visitor from Ohio.
Those who live near canals in Lehigh and other areas are cautioned to be careful when they are near a canal and be on the lookout for alligators any time of the year. The public is warned not to ever feed an alligator.
The sightings of alligators in local canals should be reported to authorities.
The Gallaher Funeral Home in Fort Myers handled local arrangements.
