Several area artists are smiling today after judges awarded them recognition at the Perceptions Art Show held at the Majestic Golf Club on Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres.

The show, presented by the Arts of the Inland, is one of the largest and most respected in Lehigh and is a “must-go” for art enthusiasts and others who enjoy seeing original paintings by the best in this area.

LaVon Koenig, president of the Arts of the Inland said original artworks by 21 local artists were judged by Florida Gulf Coast University Associate Professor of Art Mary Sullivan Voytek. Four monetary awards and two ribbon awards were given out to the talented winners, she said.

“It was raining outside, one of the few days we get nothing but rain, but inside Majestic Golf Club, there were rays of creative sunshine everywhere,” Koenig said. The event took place on Nov. 9 and a large crowd turned out for the annual show.

After the judging was completed, the visitors were able to spend a large part of the day admiring the winning entries and talking with the artists.

Koenig said the Best of Show winner was Maureen G. Hahn’s acrylic piece titled “Michael on Perdido” which showed not only a high skill level and talent but emitted an emotional connection and feeling of awe, Koenig quoted the judge as saying.

First Place winner was Connie Killebrew’s acrylic work titled “Sweet Nothings” which judge Voytek said was a showed skill, nice composition and the feeling of a caress between the lions.

Second Place winner was Donna Thewlis’ powdered mineral on porcelain piece “Yaaawow.” Judge Voytek said she felt it was well done using a very difficult and unusual technique but exhibiting an emotional connection.

Third Place winner was Joan Benner for her oil painting titled “The Vega Boy.” Judge Voytek said it showed a good skill level in portraiture and captured the personalities.

Koenig said honorable mention awards were given to Paul Dengler for his photograph “Sunflower and to Jeffery Dodd for his photograph on aluminum “Baldy View.”

The artwork by East Lee County High School students of Art Director Samantha Hower were also showcased as well as easels constructed by students of instructor Ted Thayer at the Perceptions Show.

Entertainment was provided by Millicent Callobre who is a member of the Arts of the Inland.

Koenig said the show would not have been possible without the helpful support of several people and businesses in Lehigh and nearby areas.
