Lehigh’s McDonald’s employees helped pack food for Harry Chapin
Recently, 168 local McDonald’s employees stepped out from behind the counter to lend a helping hand in the community.
Over the course of the week, they sorted and packed 25,133 pounds of food, including breads, sweet potatoes and rice, at the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Fort Myers and Naples, creating 20,944 meals.
In total, McDonald’s employees – crew members, managers and owner-operators – worked 361 hours at the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
“McDonald’s has a long history of caring about its communities, and my employees and I were pleased to be able to give back to our community in such an impactful way,” Darlene Tregunno, who owns and operates four McDonald’s restaurants in Lehigh Acres and Fort Myers, said. “We are proud that our work will make a difference in the lives of some of the neediest Southwest Floridians.”
While many local McDonald’s owner-operators give their employees the opportunity to perform community service, this marked the first time that the Southwest Florida restaurants collectively performed a project for a specific organization.

Lehigh leaders raise $4,889 in ‘bail’ for MDA
The Muscular Dystrophy Association issued fun arrest warrants for local business and civic leaders on Nov. 19.
The group of community-minded residents was put “behind bars” for MDA’s signature Lock-Up fundraiser at Jake’s Wayback Burgers.
Accused of having big hearts and being heavily armed with kindness, these “jailbirds” helped raise more than $4,500 for families affected by neuromuscular diseases in the Lehigh Acres area.
In order to be released, each jailbird’s “bail” was set at $1,600, and the money was raised by encouraging friends, family, co-workers and business contacts to make contributions to MDA.
The funds raised will help MDA assist hundreds of local individuals and families living with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle diseases throughout the area.
The Lock-Up also will help send Southwest Florida youth to MDA’s summer camp at Rotary’s Camp in Brandon, where all activities are designed for kids with limited mobility and volunteers provide the one-on-one assistance needed to optimize participation.
Some activities include archery, swimming, sports, and arts and crafts.
MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.
The association also provides unparalleled health care services; advocates for the families it serves; and invests significant resources educating the medical and scientific communities, as well as the general public, about neuromuscular diseases affecting more than 1 million Americans.
MDA maintains a network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics – 38 of which are MDA/ALS centers – throughout the country. In Southwest Florida, families can receive care for progressive muscle diseases at the MDA Clinic at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
