Celebrating the beginning of his 13th year in Lehigh Acres, Dr. Alaa El-Gendy, the owner of Florida Lung & Sleep Associates, says he isn’t moving he’s staying in Lehigh at 2625 Lee Blvd., next to the Lehigh Super Walmart.
“I bring this up because there are lots of rumors circulating in the community and in the medical community especially that I am leaving Lehigh and nothing could be further from the truth,” El-Gendy said.
He leads the clinic and specializes in the latest technologies for early lung cancer diagnosis and management of bronchial diseases.
“I’ve been inconstant practice here in Lehigh since 2002 and began the first and only outpatient center for pulmonary and sleep disorders.
“Why would I move to Fort Myers? I have an excellent patient base that depend on us here,” he said.
El-Gendy is active in raising community awareness such as free lung cancer screening, holding a free spirometer day, offering a free sleep awareness day, a popular children’s fishing tournament. El-Gendy is also on the board of directors of the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce. His practice is full accreditation and his clinic is a member of American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), and he is a member of the College of American Pathologist (GAP.
Lehigh Acres has a physician that has been recognized nationally and internationally for his work and recognized nationally for the first Bronchial Thermoplasty procedure in Southwest Florida.
On November 28 of 2012, El-Gendy performed the first Bronchial Thermoplasty 9BT) in Southwest Florida.
Bronchial Thermoplasty is a new treatment option to treat severe asthmatics. El-Gendy says this treatment is an outpatient procedure that reduces excessive airway smooth muscle, decreasing the ability of the airways to constrict during an asthma attack.
In fact, El-Gendy has his Bronchial Thermoplasty abstract presentations accepted by the American Thoracic Society International Conference Committee which were handed out in May in San Diego. His abstract has been programmed as a poster presentation.
El-Gendy was invited to lead the first Bronchial Thermosplasty workshop in his native Egypt.
On July 19, 2012, El-Gendy performed the first new procedure called Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy in Lee County. That is a new technology that uses GPS-like features to locate and biopsy lesions that are deep in the lunch (lung spot).
Dr. Alaa El-Gendy leads this clinic with family members associated with the medical firm.
He was raised in Cairo, Egypt and attended Al-Azhar University. He received his doctor of medicine degree in 1982. He also attended the graduate school at Ohio State University and later, El-Gendy completed a three-year Internal Medicine residency at the university of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
He began and completed a fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep medicine at the Medical College or Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University.
El-Gendy said that during his residency and fellowships, he rotated through East Orange and Philadelphia Veterans Administration hospitals.
He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical care. Upon the completion of his fellowship, he served as an assistant professor of medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University and he became the director of the ICU at the Medical College of Pennsylvania.
He says he has a special interest in lung cancer, asthma, COPD, and sleep disorders. He is the founder of the Lung Nodule Clinic at Florida Lung & Sleep Associates in Lehigh.
Many people know his son, Ahmed El-Gendy who is one of a few people who has served as honorary mayor of Lehigh for two years, raising funds for Healthy Harvest, Lehigh Community Services and the Chest Institute.
He is associated with Lee County Health Systems.
“Am I leaving Lehigh? The answer is no. This is my community and I have wonderful patients and their best interests are what it’s all about,” El-Gendy said.
“How the rumors started is unknown but he believes there are those who want him to leave town. That’s not in the picture. I’m staying here,” he insisted. For those who have questions of El-Gendy, call 239-369-3333.
“Our motto is ‘improving quality of life, one patient at a time,'” El-Gendy said.
