Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help tracking down the driver who ran over and left for dead a Lehigh Acres man last month.

Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol said Charles Snyder, 45, was riding his bicycle along Sunshine Boulevard shortly after 11 p.m. on Nov. 7. Around 11:10 p.m., an unknown driver struck Snyder from behind, causing him to be ejected from his bicycle, causing fatal injuries.

Rather than stopping to help render aid to Snyder, the unknown driver made the choice to leave the scene before troopers arrived.

Although it is not known exactly the type of vehicle involved in the crash, troopers believe the car may be a light-colored passenger car, with damage to the front headlight area.

“Had the driver pulled over that night after the crash and tried to help Mr. Snyder, he or she would likely not be facing any criminal charges, especially given that Mr. Snyder’s bicycle didn’t have proper lighting for nighttime riding,” Trish Routte, coordinator for Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, said. “But the fact that the driver took off, knowing that they ran someone over, changes this from an accident to a fatal hit and run and jail time will accompany an arrest.”
