AOI member named artist of the month
Josh Martinez Jr., a member of Arts of the Inland, is the featured artist for the month of December at Lehigh Regional Medical Center, at 1500 Lee Blvd.
A Clewiston resident, Josh was diagnosed with autism and epilepsy at the age of 2. He began creating abstract art his freshman year of high school.
Josh’s parents helped him open an art store, Art By Josh and More, where he can display his work and offer brochures and books on autism and other disabilities.
Proceeds from the store go to The Art By Josh Scholarship fund, with a scholarship awarded to a graduating senior interested in a career in special education or art.
Now until Jan. 3, see Josh’s artwork on display in the cafeteria at Lehigh Regional Medical Center from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Art By Josh and More is at 509 E. Sugarland Highway in Clewiston. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Girl Scouts earn photography badges
Members of Girl Scout Troop 714 in Lehigh Acres earned their photography badges after learning about digital photography and different types of digital cameras.
The girls were shown how to use a cell phone in panorama mode, a professional Canon camera and a Samsung mini-high definition video and still camera.
To get their badges, the troop learned to take photos using a professional camera and different lenses. They also used a computer to crop and edit photos and posted the photos on Facebook.
Robert Anderson, a Lehigh Acres resident, helped the girls earn their badges.
Free car seat safety inspection
The Kohl’s Kids Safety Program and the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida will provide a free car seat safety inspection on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lehigh Public Library, at 881 N. Gunnery Road.
Car seats will be available at a reduced price if an attendee’s car seat is part of a recall, is outdated or is not the appropriate car seat.
Bilingual fitting technicians will be available.

The performance is free and open to the public.

The Lee County Community Band will perform an annual holiday concert on Dec. 14.
There will be secular and sacred Christmas music, like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” Victor Herbert’s “March of the Toys” from “Babes in Toyland,” and “O Holy Night.”
The program also includes medleys of favorite Christmas carols and an audience sing-a-long.
Other concerts this season are set for the following dates:
– Jan. 11
– Feb. 8
– March 8
– April 12
All of the concerts will be held at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at Cape Coral High School, at 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd.
The programs are free of charge, but donations are accepted.
The 50-member band welcomes new members.

Working with Santa, the VegHeads 4-H youth club will install one raised vegetable garden bed for one lucky winner.
The club will supply all of the materials, including the soil, fertilizer, seeds and plants.
For a chance to win the garden, write Santa a letter – less than 500 words – explaining:?why you want the garden; why you have not installed a garden for yourself; and where the garden will go.
Include your name, address, phone number and email, if you have one, with the letter.
Mail or drop off the letter to: Santa’s Garden, Veterans Park, 55 S. Homestead Road, Lehigh Acres, FL 33936.
The deadline to submit a letter is Dec. 15 at 5 p.m.

Carla Ulakovic, author of the book “Images of America: Lehigh Acres,” will take part in a book signing event on Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Florida Community Bank, at 1261 N. Homestead Road.
Released in September, the book focuses on the history of Lehigh Acres, with the hope of preserving the town’s memories.
“Images of America: Lehigh Acres” is part of Arcadia Publishing’s iconic “Images of America” book series.

Hear favorite songs like “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The band will also perform Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” and Jose Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad.”
The event is free of charge, but donations are accepted. The band will also collect donations of non-perishable food for the Lehigh Community Services.

Proceeds from the store go to The Art By Josh Scholarship fund, with a scholarship awarded to a graduating senior interested in a career in special education or art.

Girl Scouts earn photography badges
Members of Girl Scout Troop 714 in Lehigh Acres earned their photography badges after learning about digital photography and different types of digital cameras.
The girls were shown how to use a cell phone in panorama mode, a professional Canon camera and a Samsung mini-high definition video and still camera.
To get their badges, the troop learned to take photos using a professional camera and different lenses. They also used a computer to crop and edit photos and posted the photos on Facebook.
Robert Anderson, a Lehigh Acres resident, helped the girls earn their badges.
Free car seat safety inspection
The Kohl’s Kids Safety Program and the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida will provide a free car seat safety inspection on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lehigh Public Library, at 881 N. Gunnery Road.
Car seats will be available at a reduced price if an attendee’s car seat is part of a recall, is outdated or is not the appropriate car seat.
Bilingual fitting technicians will be available.

AOI artist to showcase work at concert
Lehigh Acres artist Olga Wood, a member of Arts of the Inland, will showcase her artwork at a concert featuring the Gulf Coast Music School students and the Silver Strings Chamber Orchestra.
The concert will be held on Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, at 13411 Shire Lane, Fort Myers.
The performance is free and open to the public.
Lee County Community Band lists concerts
The Lee County Community Band will perform an annual holiday concert on Dec. 14.
There will be secular and sacred Christmas music, like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” Victor Herbert’s “March of the Toys” from “Babes in Toyland,” and “O Holy Night.”
The program also includes medleys of favorite Christmas carols and an audience sing-a-long.
Other concerts this season are set for the following dates:

– Feb. 8
– March 8
– April 12
All of the concerts will be held at 3 p.m. in the auditorium at Cape Coral High School, at 2300 Santa Barbara Blvd.
The programs are free of charge, but donations are accepted.

One to win free vegetable garden
Working with Santa, the VegHeads 4-H youth club will install one raised vegetable garden bed for one lucky winner.
The club will supply all of the materials, including the soil, fertilizer, seeds and plants.
For a chance to win the garden, write Santa a letter – less than 500 words – explaining:?why you want the garden; why you have not installed a garden for yourself; and where the garden will go.
Include your name, address, phone number and email, if you have one, with the letter.

Lehigh Singers to host concert at school
The Lehigh Singers, will host a concert on Dec. 16 from 8-9 a.m. at Lehigh Acres Elementary School, at 200 Schoolside Court.
They will bring an old favorite work – “‘Twas the Night before Christmas,” accompanied by Marian Wegge.
The concert is open to the public.
The Lehigh Singers rehearse every Tuesday until mid-March from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Landex Building on Homestead Road

Author to participate in book signing
Carla Ulakovic, author of the book “Images of America: Lehigh Acres,” will take part in a book signing event on Dec. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Florida Community Bank, at 1261 N. Homestead Road.
Released in September, the book focuses on the history of Lehigh Acres, with the hope of preserving the town’s memories.
“Images of America: Lehigh Acres” is part of Arcadia Publishing’s iconic “Images of America” book series.
Lehigh Concert Band to perform free concert
The Lehigh Concert Band will perform on Dec. 21 at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights Blvd.
Hear favorite songs like “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree”, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” The band will also perform Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” and Jose Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad.”
The event is free of charge, but donations are accepted. The band will also collect donations of non-perishable food for the Lehigh Community Services.

Socks for Seniors needs coordinators
The Socks for Seniors campaign will run through Christmas.
It is an annual community service project in which new socks are collected and distributed to the elderly in area nursing homes.
The campaign is looking for local area coordinators in Lehigh Acres to help in the collection.

4-H FunDay youth art contest planned
Arts of the Inland is sponsoring a youth art contest with the theme “family fun” at the 4-H FunDay.
There are three categories: youth up to the age of 7, ages 8-12, and ages 13-18. Each age category will receive first, second and third place prize ribbons.
Entries will be accepted at the 4-H FunDay, which will be held on Jan. 24 at Veterans Park, at 55 S. Homestead Road.

The Lehigh Acres Community Pool, at 1400 W. Fifth St., is heated and open to the public year round.
Commit to get fit with aqua aerobics. Choose from an invigorating fast paced workout offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday or the ultra-low impact National Arthritis Foundation sponsored class at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday and Friday. Classes are in chest deep water and 45 minutes in length.

Healthy Harvest Community Farms, at 607 Mirror Lakes Drive, will host boot camp classes.
The following are planned:
– Mondays and Fridays from 6 to 7 p.m. at Williams Park
– Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Veterans Park
– Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m and Saturdays from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Healthy Harvest Community Farms
