Hickey’s Creek Mitigation Park, at 17980 Palm Beach Blvd., presents the following:
– Guided Walk
9-11 a.m. Jan. 6
Join park staff on a stroll through natural plant communities. See firsthand the plants and animals that make Southwest Florida so unique. Participants should be able to walk about one and a half miles; trail is only stroller and handicap accessible for about a quarter of a mile. Dress appropriately and bring a water bottle. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free with paid parking. Limit of 25 participants. Groups of five or more, please call ahead.
– Astronomy for Amateurs
6:30 p.m. Jan. 16
This program is designed to show beginning astronomers how to easily find stars, constellations and planets. Bring binoculars, water, bug spray, a flashlight and a lawn chair or something to sit on. Meet in the parking lot. Free with paid parking, but may be canceled due to inclement weather, clouds or if the minimum participation is not met. Registration is required.
– Caloosahatchee to Hickey’s Creek Kayak Trip
9 a.m.-3 p.m. Jan. 29
This kayak trip begins and ends at Caloosahatchee Regional Park campground. The guided tour travels along the Great Calusa Blueway, which includes Hickey’s Creek, one of the area’s most scenic waterways. Paddle an hour and a half to Hickey’s Creek Mitigation Park, eat lunch and stretch our legs on a hike before paddling back to Caloosahatchee Regional Park. This trip is best for paddlers with some kayaking experience and/or in good physical condition for a five-mile roundtrip paddle. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own water, lunch, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance of Caloosahatchee Regional Park at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $40 per person. Registration is required.

Hickey’s Creek is one of the largest regional parks in Lee County, encompassing 862 acres.
Co-managed with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the preserve consists of a variety of habitats including palmetto-oak scrub, pine flatwoods and seasonal wetlands.
Park amenities include parking, restrooms, a canoe/kayak landing, a fishing pier, picnic areas with tables, bridges across Hickey’s Creek, trail shelters and five miles of hiking trails. There is a handicap accessible trail to Hickey’s Creek and to the amphitheater.
The park is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The parking is free for those with a valid Lee County parking pass. Those who do not have a pass are required to pay $1 per hour or $5 per day; bring exact change.
