Caloosahatchee Regional Park presents programs

Caloosahatchee Regional Park, at 18500 N. River Road, Alva, announces the upcoming:

– Guided Nature Walk

9-11 a.m. Jan. 3 and 20

Join park staff on a stroll through natural plant communities. See firsthand the plants and animals that make Southwest Florida so unique. Participants should be able to walk approximately one and a half miles. Dress appropriately and bring a water bottle. Meet at the main entrance of the park at 18500 N. River Road. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program is free with paid parking. Registration is not required. Limit of 25 participants. Groups of five or more, call ahead.

– Nature Mysteries Preschool Program (ages 3-6)

10-11:30 a.m. Jan. 7

Preschoolers will learn about insect galls, lichens, seeds that look like bugs, bugs that look like leaves and other unusual and mysterious things. We will play an observation game to warm up, go on a hike as nature detectives and make a craft to take home. Meet at the main entrance of the park at 18500 N. River Road. The cost is $5 per preschooler. A parking fee is required. Registration is required.

– Oxbow Kayak Clinic

9-11 a.m. Jan. 8

This class will introduce you to the basic techniques of paddling and then you will have the opportunity to use your new skills for a guided trip. We will paddle the beautiful oxbow islands of the Caloosahatchee River for a two-hour guided and informational tour. Be prepared to experience nature at its best. The tour is perfect for all ages and abilities. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own water, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $25 per person. Registration is required.

– 12th Annual River, Roots and Ruts

8 a.m. Jan. 11 (Half Marathon and Two-Person Relay)

8:15 a.m. Jan. 11 (5K Fun Run)

“Have you hugged a root lately?” Registration for the 12th Annual River, Roots and Ruts Trail Run is open. The main event is a 13.1-mile half marathon utilizing both sides of the park: the wide nature trails on the south side and the single lane mountain bike trails on the north side. For those in training for a race or just off one, or for those that may want to experience a little less nature we have a two-person half-marathon relay, over the same course. For those who feel that 3.1 miles is just the right amount of nature we offer a 5K Fun Run along the wide nature trails on the south side of the park. – Cypress Creek Kayak Tour

9-11 a.m. Jan. 15

This slow-paced paddle is great for all experience levels. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own water, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance of Caloosahatchee Regional Park at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $25. Registration is required.

– Birding Home School Program (ages 8-12)

9-11a.m. Jan. 22

During this home school program students will learn about bird body parts and how to quickly identify birds in the field. We will also hike to find birds using binoculars. Binoculars can be provided but students are encouraged to bring their own. Meet at the campground entrance at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $5 per student. A parking fee is required. Registration is required.

– Caloosahatchee to Hickey’s Creek Kayak Trip

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 29

This kayak trip begins and ends at the Caloosahatchee Regional Park campground. The guided tour travels along the Great Calusa Blueway, which includes Hickey’s Creek, one of the area’s most scenic waterways. We paddle an hour and a half to Hickey’s Creek Mitigation Park, eat lunch and stretch our legs on a hike before paddling back to Caloosahatchee Regional Park. This trip is best for paddlers with some kayaking experience and/or in good physical condition for a five-mile roundtrip paddle. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All kayaking equipment is provided. Bring your own water, lunch, sunscreen, binoculars, clothing and shoes that can get wet. Meet at the campground entrance of Caloosahatchee Regional Park at 19130 N. River Road. Cost is $40 per person. Registration is required.

Caloosahatchee Regional Park features 768 acres of pine flatwoods, scrub oak, cypress swamps and oak hammocks. Crossing through them, you will find over 18 miles of hiking, mountain biking and equestrian trails.

Primitive camp sites for families and groups are available, along with equestrian sites for people with horses. Kayaking and fishing are available along the banks of the Caloosahatchee River.
