The month’s roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following activities are free to the public:

Adults

Local, registered yoga instructor Janelle teaches the basics from the comfort of a chair. This gentle introduction to yoga is suitable for all ages and experience levels. Registration is required.

– Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. Jan. 5, 12 and 19

A venue for beginners and aficionados alike to rise to the chess challenge. Sets provided, but players are welcome to bring their own.

In honor of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the library will host a special screening of the 2012 documentary Half the Sky. This thought-provoking and informative film will be followed by a discussion.

10 a.m. Jan. 12

Streaming and downloadable content for mobile devices, such as e-books, audio e-books, music, videos, magazines and language learning will be the focus of this class. Class participants must bring their library card number, pin number, Adobe ID and app-enabled digital device to get the most out of class. Registration is required.

Personalized help with any digital device and an overview of the library’s digital materials. Registration is required.

– Financial Literacy Workshop

6:30 p.m. Jan. 13

Denny Fackler with First Financial Education Centers teaches basic budgeting, planning and debt reduction.

5 p.m. Jan. 14 and 28

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and patterns. Attendees should bring their own projects. Basic supplies available for newcomers. Sponsored by the Friends of the East County Regional Library.

– Baby Pop-Up Box Cards

10 a.m. Jan. 24

Participants create a box-shaped baby shower card. Shapes, pop-ups, die-cuts and stamping will be taught in class. Class difficulty: Medium/Hard. Registration is required.

– Family Storytime

This program is for the whole family and lasts about 30 minutes.

– Toddler Storytime

10 a.m. Jan. 14, 21 and 28

Children 2 years old and their caregivers participate in song, fingerplays and short stories. The success of this age group depends on adult participation and encouragement. Toddler storytime lasts approximately 30 minutes.

– Baby-Parent Rhyme Time

10 a.m. Jan. 15, 22 and 29

10 a.m. Jan. 24

Be prepared to tickle, jump and fly with your baby! These rhymes and songs are for infants, up to 24 months, accompanied by an adult. This 20-minute program is filled with songs designed to introduce rhyming and movement to infants.

4:30-5:30 p.m. Jan. 7

3-4 p.m. Jan. 31

Children and teens earn a $2 coupon for every 15 minutes they read in the designated area for a total of $8 in one session. Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under only.

– Preschool Storytime

Preschoolers (ages 3 to 5) attend this storytime independently while parents or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities that require more participation and a longer attention span. Each preschool storytime lasts about 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Fun opposite stories, a game of opposites and a craft.

– Symphony Storytime

10 a.m. Jan. 27

A tuneful twist on family storytime, offered in partnership with the Gulf Coast Symphony. Registration is required.
