By Staff | Dec 31, 2014

At 2:17 a.m. Dec. 27, Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 16101 Alico Road in reference to a single-vehicle accident.

According to detectives, the vehicle was traveling West on Alico and attempted to take a right-hand curve. The vehicle left the roadway in the curve, traveling through a ditch and a chain link fence. The vehicle then overturned and caught fire.

Due to the extensive damage, detectives are trying to determine the vehicle type as well as the identity of the single occupant.

Approximately 12 minutes later, deputies responded to an unrelated crash. At 2:29 a.m., deputies responded to the single-vehicle crash at 12800 Orange River Blvd.

According to deputies, a rental vehicle, driven by Luiz Powell, 24, of Lehigh Acres, was traveling east on Orange approaching Justinwood Road. The vehicle left the south shoulder of the roadway, striking a palmetto scrub. The vehicle then overturned and continued to travel over a brick wall, spreading debris across a church property.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling at approximately 115 miles per hour.

Powell was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
