School district awarded grant

President Barack Obama recently announced the states and communities that will receive $250 million in Preschool Development grants and $500 million in Early Head Start Child Care Partnership awards to enhance and expand preschool programs and to improve access to high-quality infant and toddler care in high-need communities.

The School District of Lee County has been awarded a $900,000 Early Head Start Child Care Partnership grant, which was submitted by the district on behalf of its Head Start/Early Head Start program together with the grant’s community partners.

The district has been the Head Start grantee since 1965 and an Early Head Start grantee since 2000.

The grant will allow Lee County to improve services provided to 72 infants and toddlers that are being served by early care and education providers in the federally identified high priority zip code areas.

The program will build positive relationships with child care providers that need to expand Early Head Start opportunities and improve quality of service.

Five centers and four family child care homes have been identified and have indicated their commitment to expanding Early Head Start opportunities.

Science and Engineering Fair, Inventors Fair planned

The Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair and the Thomas A. Edison Inventors Fair will be held on Feb. 7 at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Alico Arena.

A sanctioned event of the Edison Festival of Light, they will showcase 400 science fair projects and approximately 300 inventions.

Judging begins at 9 a.m. The inventors fair will be open to the public from 1:30 to 4 p.m.; the science fair will be open from 2 to 5 p.m.
