Lehigh writer’s play on stage next month

By Staff | Jan 7, 2015

Chuck Wood

A Lehigh Acres man, a talented playwright, says tickets to a play he will present at the Firehouse Community Theatre in LaBelle on Feb. 20, 21, and 22 as well as Feb. 27, 28 and March 1, are on sale now at $12 in advance and later, $14 at the door.

Chuck Wood said he believes audiences will enjoy “Up Close from a Distance.” It was the 2013-14 winner of the first annual Clarence “Bud” Jones playwriting competition.

Large group sales can be as low as $10 and you can call (863) 675-3066 or go online at: www.firehousecommunitytheatre.com for tickets.

This drama by Wood is a supernatural love story featuring a South Florida college instructor who attempts to write the perfect love story for the stage under the direction of her colleague who directs the theatre program.

“Meanwhile, miles away in northeast Ohio, an accomplished artist, encouraged by his travel writer friend, is challenged to locate a captivating woman whose facial image repeatedly visits him in dreams,” Wood told The Citizen.

Rounding out the cast are two young acting students who learn what the older characters already know: often real life and life upon the stage overlap

“Larger-than-life forces confront the six persons involved in this drama,” Wood said, “leading them to examine life choices within their control as well as those beyond their ability to change.

Wood said the initial motivation for writing this play was to explore the idea that dreams may be more than symbolic. He says they may represent another dimension of reality.

“Another concept examined in this drama is whether the soul and spirit are separate or one in the same,” Wood said.

He believes “Up Close from a Distance” will allow a theatre audience the opportunity to follow a memorable adventure as it unfolds before their eyes. He said unexpected events bring the portrait artist and the professor/ playwright together in an afternoon and evening that will determine a future that was conceived by a force not easy for them to accept.

Playwright Chuck Wood is a retired teacher and director with high school and college teaching experience. He has a master’s degree in theatre from Kent State University. His independent study and master’s thesis dealt with studying working habits of selected American playwrights and theories and practices, related to the playwriting process.

Wood was also a performance adjudicator and board member of the Ohio Theatre Alliance.

He is also a member locally of Arts of the Inland and Florida Gulf Coast Writers Association.

The Firehouse Theatre is a small intimate venue that seats no more than 80 people.

Wood said at least 50 seats for each performance are already sold to season ticket holders.

“There are still tickets, maybe 20 tickets per show that are still available,” Wood said.

You can email Wood at: Olchwood@aol.com and if you want to get a good seat, you shouldn’t wait too long.

“I can promise you a good performance. I think the theatre-going public here in Southwest Florida will enjoy the play. There are many people in Lehigh Acres who enjoy the arts and this is an attempt to let them know of the upcoming play,” he said.
