SA Open Enrollment begins

The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2015-16 school year began on Jan. 20 and will run through March 27. It is for:

– Students entering kindergarten, sixth or ninth grade

– Students new to the district

Students currently enrolled in a school may participate if they want to change schools next year.

On Jan. 15, pre-printed applications were mailed to parents of pre-K students attending Lee County public schools who are eligible for kindergarten, as well as current fifth- and eighth-grade students who attend a Lee public school.

Parents of children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1 should apply for kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year. Parents need to register their child even if they have an older child already in school – assignments are not automatic.

Student assignment utilizes a lottery system. A family who registers the first day of Open Enrollment has the same chance of getting a school as that of a family who registers the last day. Families are encouraged to continue to attend open houses and tour schools before completing their final school choice rankings.

If families received a pre-printed application, they are encouraged to apply online at: studentassignment.leeschools.net. This option is not available to new students or students attending a charter school.

The district has also unveiled a “Find My School” tool for parents. Parents are encouraged to visit online to map their address and find schools that are in their subzone.

Parents and students may also visit schools during open house. Visit online or call the school to find out the date and time.

Parents may come to any of the following Student Assignment locations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to register children:

– Lehigh Acres Office, 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207

– Cape Coral Office, 370 N. Santa Barbara Blvd.

– Fort Myers Office, 2855 Colonial Blvd.

Meetings live on YouTube, app

Beginning Jan. 27, Lee County School Board meetings will be broadcast live on the district’s YouTube page available in the Lee County Public Schools app or at: YouTube.com/LeeSchoolsTV.

This new feature allows the public to view meetings on any device from anywhere in the world.

All broadcasts will begin 30 minutes prior to the meeting and will be found at the top of the YouTube page.

Along with live streaming, meetings will also be indexed using the online agenda allowing for on-demand viewing by specific agenda items. On-demand meetings and agendas can be found in the drop-down menu under the “School Board” tab of the district’s main website: leeschools.net.

Indexed Board meetings will normally be available within 24 hours of a school board meeting.

School board briefing and action meetings provide valuable insight into important initiatives occurring in the district.

The Lee County Public Schools app is in the app and Play stores for Apple and Android devices.

Annual Thomas A. Edison fairs set

The Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Science and Engineering Fair and the Thomas A. Edison Inventors Fair will be held on Feb. 7 at Florida Gulf Coast University.

They will showcase 400 science projects and 300 inventions. The inventors fair will be open from 1:30 to 4 p.m.; the science fair will be open from 2 to 5 p.m.
