District names Teacher of the Year finalists
The Lee County School District announced the following five teachers as finalists for this year’s Teacher of the Year Award:
Area finalists are:
– Elise Leyva, of Lehigh Senior High School
Elise Leyva has come full circle at Lehigh Senior High. She was a graduate of the school and AVID tutor before joining the Lightning Family as a math teacher two years ago. Along with her team, she attended multiple trainings to prepare including AVID Summer Institute, Kagan Mathematics training, and a variety of educational technology trainings. Together her team researched how to better reach struggling at risk math students. As a result, her team improved their algebra EOC passing rate by 17 percentage points last year. Her commitment to teaching and learning makes her an innovative member of Lehigh Senior High.
The others are:
– Natalie Noel Siler-Hercek, of North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts
– Mark Jones, of South Fort Myers High School
– Kerri McCormick, of Manatee Elementary School
– Laura Jordan, of Caloosa Elementary School
The district will surprise the winner today, Feb. 4, during a special ceremony.

SA Open Enrollment Period begins
The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2015-16 school year is until March 27.
The period is for:
– Students entering kindergarten, sixth or ninth grade
– Students new to the district
Students currently enrolled in a school may participate if they want to change schools next year.
Parents of children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1 should apply for kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year. Parents need to register their child even if they have an older child already in school – assignments are not automatic.
Student assignment utilizes a lottery system. A family who registers the first day of Open Enrollment has the same chance of getting a school as that of a family who registers the last day. Families are encouraged to continue to attend open houses and tour schools before completing their final school choice rankings.
If families received a pre-printed application, they are encouraged to apply online at: studentassignment.leeschools.net. This option is not available to new students or students attending a charter school.
The district has also unveiled a “Find My School” tool for parents. Parents are encouraged to visit online to map their address and find schools that are in their subzone.
Parents and students may also visit schools during open house. Visit online or call the school to find out the date and time.
Parents may come to any of the following Student Assignment locations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to register children:
– Lehigh Acres Office, 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207
– Cape Coral Office, 370 N. Santa Barbara Blvd.
– Fort Myers Office, 2855 Colonial Blvd.
