LCSO warns of door-to-door cons
It is that time of year again for Southwest Floridians to be on their toes as door-to-door con-artists, gypsies and travelers head our way looking to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners.
These thieves and shady characters are very good at using tactics, such as persuasion and sympathy to separate people from their money.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office wants residents to know what to do should they receive a knock on the door from someone selling or soliciting in your neighborhood.
Door to door solicitations: Many of these crews head south for the winter with one thing in mind – knock on as many doors as possible to try and sell anything, from cleaning products, to magazines.
In the sales pitch, the representative might explain they are working to help get their lives back on track, raising money to help support a charity or providing reading material to troops by selling magazine subscriptions.
Citizens should be aware that Florida law prohibits home solicitation sale without first obtaining a valid home solicitation sale permit from the Clerk of the Circuit Court for the county in which the applicant intends to conduct door to door sales – some exclusions apply.
A “hawker or peddler” who wishes to conduct this type of business in Lee must file a sworn application with the tax collector and must have in their possession a picture ID with permit number, expiration date, name, date of birth and other required information.
Violation of the ordinance can result in a misdemeanor arrest for peddling without a permit or license.
Below are a few tips to keep in mind should you encounter home solicitation:
– Never let a stranger in your home
– Do not hesitate to immediately report unknown or suspicious people, activity or vehicles by calling (239) 477-1000
– Keep all doors, including the garage door closed and locked at all times
– Do not fall for high pressure sales tactics or stories that tug on the heartstrings
