By Staff | Feb 25, 2015

Greg Diserio

Three projects will come up review at the Lehigh Acres Architectural Planning & Zoning Review Board this week. The board meets Feb. 26 at 1299 Homestead Road and the public is invited to attend.

Decisions from this board are forwarded to the hearing examiner in Lee County with suggestions for changes, approval or non-approval from the Lehigh Architectural Board, which is an arm of the Lehigh Community Council.

Greg Diserio is the chairman of the ARB. Agendas provided by Diserio show that a major project known as Bentley Crossing will be presented by Morris-Depew & Associates.

The project is located on three parcels at the intersection of Buckingham and Gunnery roads. The request is to rezone from agricultural to a Mixed Use Planned Development consisting of 400 residential units and 150,000 square feet of commercial space.

All the parcels lie within the Lehigh Acres Planning Community.

Diserio said this project was previously set for a presentation in June of last year, but was canceled.

Approval for rezoning will also come before the board for a proposed major animal hospital complex. Zoning approval will be sought for 5642 Eighth St., at the corner of Lee Blvd. and Leonard Blvd. North.

The presentation, according to Diserio, will be made by Peter M. Maastricht of Maastrick Engineering in Fort Myers.

Preliminary plans show that the project will include an animal hospital, consisting of 14,900 square feet, another building for a proposed retail site with 12,600 square feet. Also included at the site are plans for a Pet Resort that will contain 9,430 square feet with large outdoor dog exercise areas.

The plans show room for 119 parking spaces. The applicant is Whitney and Charles Whitford of 2920 Lee Blvd., Lehigh.

Also to be discussed is a residence variance. Ron Cardini of WIS Inc., will present on behalf of the owners a building with a request to convert a garage into living quarters for a mother-in-law quarters at 920 Moore Ave.

The residence was built in 1986. The work converting the garage was performed without permits by the previous owners and prior to the applicant purchasing the property, according to the applicants. This property was listed for sale with the conversion listed and purchased by the applicant in September of last year.

The board meets at 5:30 p.m. at 1299 Homestead Rd., in the community room of the Lee County Sheriff’s Substation. Enter through the rear door and park in the adjoining parking lot.
