Teams take part in Odyssey of the Mind
Lehigh Acres Middle School sent two teams to the Odyssey of the Mind competition on Feb. 28 at Riverdale High School.
The teams have been working since October on creating problem solving skills for the competition.
The school’s Odyssey of the Mind Program is under the direction of Emilie Schmidt.
Lehigh Middle School announces changes
Lehigh Acres Middle School announces that the Cambridge Academic Program has expanded to include seventh-graders, the Avid Program has seen an increase in student participation and the recent Honor Roll Assembly showed an increase in the number of students earning a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
The school also saw Dr. Patrick Davis move from the classroom to the position of head school counselor, and Francisco Torres was hired as a new school counselor.
LAMS?chorus, band to undergo assessment
The Lehigh Acres Middle School’s Advanced Chorus will perform on March 6 at the Music Performance Assessment at North Port High School.
The students will sing several songs on stage and sight read music for a panel of judges. The scores will be compiled for a final rating of “Superior,” “Excellent,” “Good,” “Fair” or “Poor.”
This is the first time the school has taken a choir to the event.
On May 14, the Advanced Band will have its Music Performance Assessment at Island Coast High School.
Open enrollment begins
The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2015-16 school year is now to March 27.
The period is for:
– Students entering kindergarten, sixth or ninth grade
– Students new to the district
Students currently enrolled in a school may participate if they want to change schools next year.
Parents of children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1 should apply for kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year. Parents need to register their child even if they have an older child already in school.
Student assignment utilizes a lottery system. A family who registers the first day of enrollment has the same chance of getting a school as that of a family who registers the last day. Families are encouraged to attend open houses and tour schools before completing their rankings.
If families received a pre-printed application, they are encouraged to apply online at: studentassignment.leeschools.net. This option is not available to new students or students attending a charter school.
Parents may come to any of the following locations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to register children:
– Lehigh Acres Office, 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207
– Cape Coral Office, 370 N. Santa Barbara Blvd.
– Fort Myers Office, 2855 Colonial Blvd.
Job training in medical office skills available
Lee County residents working at low-skill, low-paying jobs who have not had an opportunity for higher education or previous job training can take advantage of cost-free job training in medical front-office skills to increase their pay.
The seven-month no-cost job-training program starts April 21 and runs through November.
Telephone interviews will be accepted now to April 17; the class is filled on a first-come, first-served basis and fills up quickly.
Applicants must be working, provide proof of earned income or unemployment compensation, proof of high school diploma or GED, proof of Lee County residency, and pass a criminal background check and basic assessment in reading, language and spelling.
The Medical Office Skills (certificate) Program provides instruction in keyboarding and computer applications, medical terminology, medical office procedures, HIPAA, and billing and coding.
Students also receive assistance with resumes, interview skills and job searching, as well as one year of intensive case management.
Applicants must have reliable transportation to the classes, which are held 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Fort Myers Institute of Technology, at 3800 Michigan Ave., Fort Myers.
The program covers all costs for tuition, books and can cover childcare cost during class hours.

The General Woman’s Club of Lehigh Acres will award several $500 scholarships to single parents with minor children living at home.
The applicant must: be a resident of Lehigh Acres; currently be enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school; and be in good standing.
There is no pre-printed application form; the following information is required:
– Proof of Lehigh Acres residence, such as a utility/electric bill or rent receipt
– Street address and telephone number; P.O. boxes not accepted
– Name of college, university or technical school enrolled in
– Brief biography that includes area of study
Applications must be received no later than April 17 in order to be considered.

Awards will be issued May 15.
