Rotary Club prepares for 5K race

By Staff | Mar 4, 2015

The 5K race will be held March 21 starting at 8 a.m. at Veterans Park, at 55 Homestead Road S.

Runners will be competing for awards in 16 male and female age group categories, plus the Overall Male and Female Winners, Masters, Grandmaster and Senior Grandmaster

The event started in 1976, making it the oldest race for runners in Lee County. The Rotary Club has been connected with the race since 1992. Originally a five-mile run to raise money for the Lehigh branch of the Lee County “Y,” when the Y closed 1983 the event continued as a four-miler, with the proceeds going to support several youth actives.

This year, it will support the East Lee County High Schools Track and Cross Country teams, JROTC Unit, Interact Club and Rotary Kids Night Baseball Game on May 8 at Hammond Stadium.

Last year, the race moved to Veterans Park to provide a safer course for the runners, so this will be the second year as a 5K race.

The hospital has been involved with the race on and off since 1983 to 1991, and for the last five years Lehigh Regional Medical Center has been title sponsor for Rotary’s Spring Festival “Race in the Park.”

Members of the Cabana Palms Day Spa staff will be available for pre- and post-race massage.

Entry fees are: pre-Registration, $20 adult and $10 students 18 and under; race day, adults $25 and $15 students 18 and under.

Online registration available at: www.ftmyerstrackclub.com.

For more information, contact Earl Hart (239) 470-6680 or wwwRaceinthePark@aol.com.

Entry forms can also be mailed to Race in the Park, 1152 Cherokee Ave., Lehigh Acres, FL 33936.
