Advanced Choir earns top ratings
Lehigh Acres Middle School’s Advanced Choir took part in the Music Performance Assessment on March 6 at the school.
The chorus received an “Excellent” rating for the second highest on stage, and a “Superior” rating for the highest in site reading from all three judges.
It was the school’s first time going to the event.

The competition was held to recognize National History Day across the nation, and the theme was “Leadership and Legacy.”
Students were required to write a research paper on the topic of their choice and create a project illustrating their topic.
LAMS recognized for AVID?program
Lehigh Acres Middle School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, program received recognition from the National Avid Office as being a highly certified site.
The program has consistently met national certifications in all 11 essential areas at Level 1 or higher, has at least six essentials rated “routine use” (Level 2) and/or institutionalization (Level 3), has been certified for at least two consecutive years and implemented for a minimum of four years.
Recognition of the following were instrumental in the program receiving its commendations:
– Strong evidence to support site team involved in recruitment of students
– Strong support of voluntary participation of teachers and site team members
– Addition of the Cambridge Academic Program offers greater opportunities for AVID students
– Site goal to increase technology speaks to the commitment of student learning
– Purposeful instruction for accessing and evaluating digital information
– Idea of creating a pre-algebra class to support student growth is a creative way to address the issue of rigor
– Site visits indicate evidence of AVID critical reading strategies in content classes
Student Assignment Open Enrollment to end
The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2015-16 year ends on March 27 at 4 p.m.
Parents or guardians of any student entering kindergarten, sixth or ninth grade, as well as any student new to the district, must complete and submit a Student Assignment application by the deadline.
Parents of children who will be 5 on or before Sept. 1 should apply for kindergarten for the 2015-16 year. Parents need to register their child, even if they have an older child already in school.
Student Assignment utilizes a lottery system. A family who registers the first day has the same chance of getting a school as that of a family who registers the last day.
The district unveiled a new “Find My School” tool for parents this year. Parents are encouraged to visit the website to map their address and find schools that are available in their subzone.
Parents may come to any of the following locations between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to register children:
– Lehigh Acres Office, 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207
– Cape Coral Office, 370 N. Santa Barbara Blvd.
– Fort Myers Office, 2855 Colonial Blvd.
Job training in medical office skills available
Lee County residents working at low-skill, low-paying jobs who have not had an opportunity for higher education or previous job training can take advantage of cost-free job training in medical front-office skills to increase their pay.
The seven-month no-cost job-training program starts April 21 and runs through November.
Telephone interviews will be accepted now to April 17; the class is filled on a first-come, first-served basis and fills up quickly.
Applicants must be working, provide proof of earned income or unemployment compensation, proof of high school diploma or GED, proof of Lee County residency, and pass a criminal background check and basic assessment in reading, language and spelling.
The Medical Office Skills (certificate) Program provides instruction in keyboarding and computer applications, medical terminology, medical office procedures, HIPAA, and billing and coding.
Students also receive assistance with resumes, interview skills and job searching, as well as one year of intensive case management.
Applicants must have reliable transportation to the classes, which are held 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Fort Myers Institute of Technology, at 3800 Michigan Ave., Fort Myers.
The program covers all costs for tuition, books and can cover childcare cost during class hours.

The General Woman’s Club of Lehigh Acres will award several $500 scholarships to single parents with minor children living at home.
The applicant must: be a resident of Lehigh Acres; currently be enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school; and be in good standing.
There is no pre-printed application form; the following information is required:
– Proof of Lehigh Acres residence, such as a utility/electric bill or rent receipt
– Street address and telephone number; P.O. boxes not accepted
– Name of college, university or technical school enrolled in
– Brief biography that includes area of study
Applications must be received no later than April 17 in order to be considered.
