League of Women Voters to welcome speaker

The League of Women Voters of Lee County Florida will host “Water Quality with Emphasis on the Everglades” on April 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Landings Helm Dining Room, at 4420 Flagship Drive, Fort Myers.

The presenter is Ray Judah, coordinator for the Florida Coastal and Ocean Coalition.

Open to the public; cost, including optional breakfast, is $15.

Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. Breakfast is served at 9 a.m. and the program starts at 9:30 a.m.

Kitten shower planned by Animal Services

Lee County Domestic Animal Services will host a kitten shower on April 11 from 10 a.m. to noon in preparation for kitten season, which runs May to November.

Needed items include kitten formula, nursing bottles, baby blankets and cat beds.

Items may be brought to the shelter or dropped off Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shelter, at 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers.

The shower will feature games, prizes, food and refreshments, as well as training on caring for newborn kittens.

Applications to become a foster volunteer will be available at the shower or can be found online.

The Lehigh Concert Band will perform on April 11 at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, at 705 Leeland Heights Blvd.

The band will perform Julius Fucik’s “Florentiner,” melodies of old comedy shows, “Dixieland Concerto” and a tribute to Willie Nelson. A small group will play big band music, a new old number called “Bill Bailey Won’t Come Home” and “Toccata for Band.”

Non-perishable food items will be collected for Lehigh Community Services, as well as donations; half of the proceeds raised will go to Lehigh Community Services.

The Comedy Machine is a “comedy club” on wheels; three comedians in a 90-minute show.

Admission for ages 16 and over is $20 in advance or $25 day of.

The proceeds will go toward the purchase of replacement uniforms for the student athletes.

It is a one-day reptile event, where vendors offer pets, supplies, feeders, cages and merchandise, as well as live animal seminars and free raffles for prizes.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12; children under the age of 5 are free.
