Job training in medical office skills available
Lee County residents working at low-skill, low-paying jobs who have not had an opportunity for higher education or previous job training can take advantage of cost-free job training in medical front-office skills to increase their pay.
The seven-month no-cost job-training program starts April 21 and runs through November.
Telephone interviews will be accepted now to April 17; the class is filled on a first-come, first-served basis and fills up quickly.
Applicants must be working, provide proof of earned income or unemployment compensation, proof of high school diploma or GED, proof of Lee County residency, and pass a criminal background check and basic assessment in reading, language and spelling.
The Medical Office Skills (certificate) Program provides instruction in keyboarding and computer applications, medical terminology, medical office procedures, HIPAA, and billing and coding.
Students also receive assistance with resumes, interview skills and job searching, as well as one year of intensive case management.
Applicants must have reliable transportation to the classes, which are held 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the Fort Myers Institute of Technology, at 3800 Michigan Ave., Fort Myers.
The program covers all costs for tuition, books and can cover childcare cost during class hours.

General Woman’s Club offering scholarships
The General Woman’s Club of Lehigh Acres will award several $500 scholarships to single parents with minor children living at home.
The applicant must: be a resident of Lehigh Acres; currently be enrolled in continuing education classes at an accredited college, university or technical school; and be in good standing.
There is no pre-printed application form; the following information is required:
– Proof of Lehigh Acres residence, such as a utility/electric bill or rent receipt
– Street address and telephone number; P.O. boxes not accepted
– Name of college, university or technical school enrolled in
– Brief biography that includes area of study
Applications must be received no later than April 17 in order to be considered.

Awards will be issued May 15.

The Lehigh Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applicants for its annual scholarship award.
The scholarships are offered to residents of Lehigh Acres who are ages 18 and older.
They are provided for any type of medical education.
Applications may be obtained at the information desk in the front lobby of Lehigh Regional Medical Center, at 1500 Lee Blvd.
Applications must received no later than April 30.
