Well groomed: Keeping dogs looking, feeling good

MEL TOADVINE An A+ Pet Grooming client is ready to go home after his cut and groom session.
Now with the warmer weather in Southwest Florida, dog owners are bringing their pets to be trimmed because of the upcoming summer heat.
“More people bring in their dogs for grooming at this time of the year than any other,” said Jackie Palmer, owner of A+ Pet Grooming at 1000 Lee Blvd. “Many owners keep their dogs groom throughout the year but with the heat coming on, we see an increase in business,” she said.
A+ Pet Grooming not only grooms dogs, although that is mostly their clientele, they groom other pets such as cats, said Kristie Bauerle, the grooming parlor’s front end desk manager.
“People have their cats groomed and often have their fur cut back. We also clip toe nails and we make sure that both our dog and cat friends are free of fleas and ticks.
As A+ Pet Grooming owner Jackie Palmer groomed one of the dogs, a new employee, Rachael Panega, looked on. It was her first day there.

Other services offered at the pet grooming business is bathing of the pets.
And there is no shortage of business. There are several other groomers in Lehigh too, Palmer said.
“We have around 25 to 30 dogs a day that we groom,” Palmer said.
“Their owners leave them here and come back in a couple of hours. The prices charge range between $30 and $65 because it depends on the size and services requested by the owners,” she said.
“We are not a veterinarian service. We groom pets and that keeps us busy,” Palmer said.

She noted that regular customers who get regular full grooming are often after given specials by lower the price.
“We have gotten to know a lot of the dogs by name and the owners tells that when the tell the dogs they are going to A+ Pet Grooming, their pets are ready to run to the car,” she laughed.
No dog is too small or too large, Palmer said. Many of their clientele are shepherds and other large dogs.
The dogs that come as repeat customers are no trouble and the grooming parlor is quiet without dogs barking at each other.
Because of the nature of the work, there are no walk-in business.
Palmer said pet owners should make reservations by calling 239-222-4650.
Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday”. They are closed Saturday and Sunday.
“When pet owners bring in their dogs, all longhaired breeds get a bath, their nails trimmed, their ears cleaned, anal glands expressed, and a haircut of the owners’ choice. All shorthaired breeds include the following treatments, a bath, nails trimmed, ears cleaned and anal glands expressed.
Pet owners get a Pet Re[port Card of what services were performed on a certain day. It includes the pet’s name, the groomer’s name and any notes the owners need to know.
“It’s the beginning of the flea and tick season and it is difficult to keep your pets from getting fleas and/or ticks when they are outside for a walk, or even if you walk the grass and the fleas attach themselves to your clothes,” Palmer said.
“We check for all those things when do the grooming,” she said.
Oh, and for those pet owners of cats who need a bath, almost an impossibility for owners at home in the tub, A+ Pet Grooming will do the job. But grooming and bathing can run between $55 and $75, depending on shorthaired cats or longhaired cats.
By bringing your cats here for a bath, you don’t have to worry at home by getting all scratched up, laughed Front Desk Manager Kristie Bauerle.
Others at A+ Pet Grooming including owner Jackie Palmer are: Pattie Hoffman, groomer for cats, Melissa Donovan, groomer; Melissa Cortesell, bather and Mike Rriggs, a bather, Kristie Bauerle, front end manager, and Rachael Panega, a new groomer.
