Lee County permit report for April

During April, contractors pulled 136 permits to build single-family houses collectively valued at nearly $26.2 million in unincorporated Lee County. That compares to 93 permits issued in March and 68 issued in April 2014, according to the Lee County Department of Community Development.

Also in April, eight multi-family units valued at $815,000 were permitted, compared to 183 in March and 151 in April 2014. March’s multi-family permitting, which was unusually high, included 136 units in 17 buildings at the Courtyards at Estero Apartments, at 10471 Corkscrew Commons Drive, and 50 units in nine buildings for Copper Oak Townhomes on Tin Maple Drive in Estero.

General commercial activity was valued at nearly $1.8 million for 13 permits, compared to over $13.9 million in March and more than $22 million in April 2014.

Lee County Community Development issued 3,493 permits of all kinds during April.

Airport adds charging stations to lots

Southwest Florida International Airport now offers charging stations for customers operating electric vehicles.

The Lee County Port Authority recently installed two Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in the short-term parking garage and two in the long-term parking lot.

There is no charge to use the service, but regular parking rates apply as drivers exit the lots.

The L2 PowerPost offers a low current, Level 2 charge designed for commercial outdoor use. It features retractable cord reel technology and comes with a J1772 coupler that will fit any Hybrid with a receptacle and electric vehicles. It operates 208 to 240 volts.

Signage has been added in each area to help direct passengers to the “electric vehicles only” spots.

Charging stations are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

EV Charging Stations are located in short-term parking on the third level, along the south side of the lot near the exit and in long-term parking in the first row.

Lee County offers summer jobs

Lee County Parks & Recreation is hiring about 60 summer camp counselors and 20 lifeguards. These temporary positions run from June 8 to Aug. 14.

The entry-level positions require experience working with children ages 6-15 for counselors and current certification for lifeguards with a starting pay of $9.25 per hour.

Counselors will assist with leading youth groups in various activities, entertainment and education programs. Lifeguards are responsible for patrolling the pool to protect swimmers and maintain order.

All positions will also perform other duties as assigned. Work could involve odd and irregular work schedules that include weekends and holidays.

Closing dates to apply are May 14-15.

Coast Guard to host open house

U.S. Coast Station Fort Myers Beach will host an open house on May 16-17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 719 San Carlos Drive, Fort Myers Beach.

There will be tours inside the station and aboard the 45-foot Rapid Response Boat RB-M and aboard the 29-foot Rapid Response Boat RB-S.

Personnel from the guard, local fire stations, local emergency medical services and local law enforcement will be on hand.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will present “Coastie,” the robotic safety boat, knot tying and a marine environment game.

The event kicks off 2015 National Safe Boating Week, which runs from May 16-22.

Passport Saturday scheduled for public

The Lee County Clerk of Court’s Recording Office will be open May 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to process passport applications at the Lee County Administration Building, 2115 Second St., Fort Myers.

This is a special benefit for families since children 15 and under must apply with both parents. Also, minors ages 16-17 must apply with at least one parent present.

No appointment necessary.

Regular passport service turnaround time is 4 to 6 weeks; expedited passport service turnaround time is 2 to 3 weeks.

Broadway Palm presents new show

The national tour of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” is making its final stop in Fort Myers on the Broadway Palm stage now through May 23.

Finding a wife in the 1850’s wasn’t easy in the Oregon mountain region, especially when there are seven brothers in one family – how the story begins. It is a high-energy musical combining the classic, physical dancing styles with fun and energetic situations.

Performances are Tuesday through Sunday evenings with selected matinees. In May, performances are Wednesday through Sunday with selected matinees.

Prices range from $37 to $60, with group discounts available for parties of 20 or more.

Tickets can be reserved by calling (239) 278-4422, by visiting: www.broadwaypalm.com, or by stopping by the box office at 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.

‘Run for Backpacks’ raises $23,000

Lipman recently hosted a “Run for Backpacks” 5K and Junior Fun Run to raise money for its annual backpack giveaway.

Through sponsorships and 145 registrations, it raised $23,000, which will be used to purchase nearly 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies for local students.

The backpack giveaway will be held on Aug. 15 to help ensure children have the tools they need.

More than 25 local organizations sponsored the event.
