Lehigh Elementary students take gold

Over 1,000 parents, school administrators and community members gathered on April 25 at the Miromar Design Center as students from eight elementary schools in Lee County competed in a ballroom dance competition.

The final competition, known as The Colors of the Rainbow Team Match, is the culminating event of the Dancing Classrooms, a national program administered locally by The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools and sponsored by the Miromar Outlets.

The results are:

– Lehigh Elementary: Gold

– Bonita Springs Elementary: Silver

– Colonial Elementary: Silver

– Dr. Carrie D. Robinson Littleton Elementary: Silver

– Edgewood Academy: Bronze

– James Stephens International: Bronze

– J. Colin English Elementary: Bronze

– Tortuga Preserve Elementary: Bronze

In its eighth year, The Colors of the Rainbow Team Match includes several rounds of competition where students are judged on various ballroom dance routines.

After 10 weeks of training, six pairs of students from each school are selected to compete.

School board votes to lessen high stakes

The School Board of Lee County recently cast a unanimous vote to lessen the high stakes associated with state required end of course exams by eliminating the 30 percent weight the exam has on a student’s final grade.

Students enrolled in algebra I, algebra II, geometry, U.S. history, biology and middle school civics will continue to participate in the end of course exams for assessment purposes. However, the result of the assessments will have no impact on the final grade parents see on the report card.

Days earlier Superintendent Nancy Graham empowered principals to eliminate hundreds of end of year common course exams previously required in nearly every subject for use in calculating a teacher’s VAM score required for the statewide performance system.

Lee Schools TV student interns win Emmys

The Lee Schools TV student intern program was recently awarded three Suncoast Television Awards of Excellence from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The school district’s news show, “CURRENTLee,” was recognized as the best student-produced newscast for the fourth year.

Student interns received awards for best feature-news package and for writing; they earned honorable mention for news story – light news, sports and directing.

District announces annual Book Battles

The Lee County School District hosted the Middle School Book Battle on May 8 at the Lee County Public Education Center, at 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers.

The Elementary Book Battle will be held on May 15.

WINK TV’s Lois Thome emceed the elementary event; NBC-2’s Lisa Spooner will emcee the middle school event.

The annual Book Battles allow teams from participating schools to compete in a game show-like competition using questions submitted by students and staff based on 15 titles that were nominated for the Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award by the Florida Association for Media in Education.

There is a separate reading list for elementary and middle.

This year’s winning titles were voted on by 26,000 students.
