The roster of activities at East County Regional Library offers topics for all ages. The following are free to the public:

Adult programs

– Chess Anyone?

4 p.m. June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29

Rise to the chess challenge and join the fun. All ages welcome. Bring your own chess set or use one of ours.

– Book Discussion: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

3:30 p.m. June 1

From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, this is the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times best-seller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Free, informal conversation sessions for adult ESOL/ESL students.

– Poetry Club

6 p.m. June 2

Join local poetry writers and enthusiasts as they meet every month to write, share, and discuss this literary art form. Meetings may vary to include workshops, speakers and readings. All welcome. Registration required.

– Chair Yoga

11 a.m. June 6

Local registered Yoga instructor Janelle teaches the basics of yoga from the comfort of a chair. This gentle introduction to yoga is suitable for all ages and experience levels. Registration is required.

– There’s A (Library) App For That.

Part 1: 10 a.m. June 8

Part 2: 3 p.m. June 17

Learn about some of the free apps you can use to take library content on the go. Part 1 focuses on apps for e-books and audio e-books while part 2 covers movies, music and more. Class participants must bring their app-enabled mobile device and know their library card information to get the most out of class.

– Download Depot Express

Noon June 10

An interactive session for patrons to receive help with downloadable eBooks, movies and more in the library’s Download Depot collection. Patrons should plan on bringing their tablets, phones or other digital devices to this hands-on help session. Registration is required.

– Knitting Nook

5 p.m. June 10 and 24

A casual, self-guided group of knitters and crocheters share ideas, techniques and projects. Attendees should bring their own projects. Basic supplies available for newcomers. Registration is required.

Storytime programs

– Family Storytime

10 a.m. June 18 and 25

Five simple practices get kids ready to read Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing and Playing. Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.

– Baby Rhyme Time

10 a.m. June 20

Reading to babies right from birth stimulates their minds, develops language skills and lays a foundation for later reading success. During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and babies in the neighborhood. First come, first served.

Credit may be applied to cards issued to patrons age 18 and under.

– C.R.O.W. – Animal Ambassadors

11 a.m. June 9

Meet Lola, Gus or Sky. Our friends from C.R.O.W. will introduce you to the Animal Ambassadors, just some of the animals you’re reading to support this summer. Tickets available June 2.

– Blackout Poetry

3 p.m. June 9

Laurie Morris teaches you how to turn book pages into artistic poems with nothing but Sharpies. Supplies provided. Registration is required.

– The Super Heroes of PBS Kids

11 a.m. June 16

Come have fun with Super Why and Word Girl from PBS Kids. Watch them in action and play word games to build your super vocabulary. Remember: Reading is power. Tickets available June 9.

– Silence in the Library

3 p.m. June 16

You’ll be challenged to participate in unimaginable, hysterical stunts, like the Cookie Face Challenge or launching rubber sticky hands at an opponent. The one guiding rule? To remain SILENT. To be followed by a game of Box of Lies. Registration required.
