Kiwanis Club announces four Lehigh ‘Heroes’
The highlight of the season for the Kiwanis Club of Lehigh Acres was held with the naming of four local “Heroes” and a list of students in Lehigh with scholarships.
Kiwanis President Jere Carrick presided over the ceremony on June 19 at Christ United Methodist Church, which included a dinner and special presentation.
The club named the “Heroes” as: Yolanda Beckworth, founder of the Grandparents Returning Into Parenting; Bill Hoppe, “Go to Guy” for the Lehigh Spring Festival; Edwin G. Martin, Lehigh Acres Fire & Rescue District; and Michael Mason, service officer for the American Legion Post 323.
Each individual devotion was given to the audience as the awards were presented.
This fall, the club will have 53 students enrolled in colleges and universities nationwide. They include 38 new scholarships and 15 who will be continuing their studies.
Carrick said students will receive $239,150 in foundation scholarships.
“This is all possible because of the wonderful people who donate and purchase clothing and household items of all kinds from the Kiwanis Thrift Store,” he said.
The store is at 15 Homestead Road.
Carrick said it would be impossible without the public and the volunteers who donate their valuable time, talents, and energy.
“We are thankful to each and every one of them for making these awards and all of our community, school, youth programs and sponsorships possible,” he said.
Carrick is the scholarship committee president and Larry Gutridge is the co-chairman.
Growable scholarships were also awarded at the banquet. The amount of $250 was presented to students who were selected because of their volunteer hours at school, church or in the community.
Carrick said the scholarship is growable because each year the recipient has an opportunity to increase it by an additional $250.
“They will have the opportunity to join our Kiwanis Leadership Program in the school that they will be attending this fall,” he said. “Additionally, should they continue their volunteer service by providing 100 verified service volunteer hours, then upon graduation from high school, our Kiwanis Foundation will total up the years and awards and present the students with a college scholarship in the total amount that they have received over the years.”
The following are recipients of various awards:
