Patty’s Pretty Paws gives dogs and cats a real ‘make-over’

Patty Boling
If you love animals like Patty Boling does and you’ve been at taking care of them for years, it is only natural that you may open a grooming shop – and that is what Patty did a year ago. She is celebrating her first anniversary.
The business is Patty’s Pretty Paws and is at 5612 8th St. The business faces Lee Boulevard at the entrance to Lehigh from Fort Myers, but the address is a little tricky.
You turn on Westgate Boulevard and then make a right turn on 8th Street West and drive down and she is at the end of the buildings.
“A lot of people laugh and say they don’t understand why we all have the 8th Street West addresses, instead of Lee Boulevard addresses,” Boling said.
She is a certified groomer and handles dogs and cats.

MEL TOADVINE Ruth Medora, of Fort Myers, comes in for a grooming. A Yorkie, Chris is a regular.
“That’s really all we do and that keeps us busy,” she said, after a customer came to pick up her large long-haired dog that had been groomed.
“I groom cats, too, but the dogs are the largest part of my business,” she said. “People bring their pet cats in here for grooming and for cutting of nails. Some people want all the fur trimmed away so the cat can grow a fresh coat of fur. It may be because the fur is matted or dirty or whatever,” she said. Cats will usually grow back their fur within five months.
And for dogs, she bathes them, grooms them, trims their nails, does haircuts, and makes sure their ears are cleaned to prevent disease. While it may sound strange, she said she also cleans anal glands for the dogs.
“This is a fluid build-up in the anal area. And if not properly taken care of, it can become a problem and even cause an infection,” she said.
Her shop is open from Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. While walk-ins are always welcome, she said a call to the shop is always a good idea. The number is 239-849-0822. She also has a website listed on her business cards as: www.pattysprettypaws.com.

MEL TOADVINE Patty Boling holds a Yorkie that she is preparing to groom, including bathing, nail trimming and more.
While cats are sometimes more difficult to bathe and have their nails cut, it is always better to start it when the cat is at a very young age.
“For people who wash their cats at home with water and cat shampoo, you can always do the same chore with a dry bath, which includes powder that is not harmful to the cat,” she said.
Anyone who has ever tried to bathe a cat in the bathtub can use that type of advice.
While this is her first year of operation in Lehigh, she said she did this type of work for 13 years in Ohio before moving to Florida.
As for prices, prices start at $40 to $45 for the complete treatment of smaller dogs. Larger dogs start at $45 and a very large dog will cost its owners $75.

MEL TOADVINE Owner Julie McFarland, of Fort Myers, takes her dog home. Dolly, who is losing her sight, came in for a complete make-over or a full grooming.
Patty said that because she is at the entrance of Lehigh and close to the Fort Myers boundaries, she receives a lot of business from the nearby neighborhoods and gated communities in that area.
“It’s a close drive to my business at the edge of Lehigh than having to ride several miles to the other areas of Fort Myers. Her daughter, Nickol, 23, also works part-time with her mother at the shop.
Patty said she also handles a lot of rescue dogs and a lot of abused dogs that many other groomers won’t handle.
And, all first-time or new customers get $10 off for a first grooming of their dog or cat, she said.
