SWFL Crime Stoppers adds signs for awareness

Trish Routte
Crime Stoppers has installed several signs at entrances to Lehigh Acres to make the public aware of the organization that helps to combat crime by asking tipsters to give them a call if they have information that leads to an arrest or conviction of an individual.
Last week, Trish Routte and others helped to plant the first sign by the Department of Transportation. Routte, the community coordinator for Crime Stoppers, said there were 20 signs posted “in all corners of the county.”
“It’s all done in hopes of encouraging residents to provide anonymous tips on crime activity in their neighborhoods,” she said.
Generally, signs were installed in areas where crime prevention specialists and Crime Stoppers staffers felt would result in the most positive impact.
Routte said in a press statement that signs are being posted all over the county, “with most in areas more prevalent to crime than others.”

MEL TOADVINE This Crime Stoppers sign was erected on Sunshine Boulevard.
The new signs are at approaches to Lehigh and include the following locations:
– Homestead Road, north of SR 82
– Lee Boulevard, east of SR 82
– Sunshine Boulevard, north of SR 82
– Daniels/Gunnery Road, eastbound
Routte said often residents witness things or even hear things in their neighborhoods and are hesitant to visibly speak to law enforcement.
“These signs will be a permanent reminder that the Crime Stoppers hotline is an outlet for them to report criminal actions, or wanted people who are compromising the safety of their neighborhoods,” she said. “The anonymous factor is key for many individuals, who want resolution to these crimes, but don’t want to become directly involved. When they call Crime Stoppers, their identity is always anonymous, and if their tip leads to an arrest, they’ll get a cash reward for their good citizenship.”
The erection of the signs occurred last Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m. All 20 signs had been installed by early afternoon.
Other sites in the county include: 2241 Case Lane, North Fort Myers; Redline St. and Pacific Ave. in Palmona Park, North Fort Myers; at the park entrance to Island Visa, North Fort Myers; Ridgeway Drive and Orange Grove Blvd., North Fort Myers; Rosemary Drive and London Lane, Bonita Springs; San Carlos Skate Park, Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, just north of FGCU Blvd., Estero, between Germain Arena and FGCU, Estero; Danley and 6th St., Fort Myers; Palm Beach Blvd., between New York Drive and Kingston, Tice; Davis Rd., near the boat ramp, Fort Myers Shores; Weber and Marquette, Fort Myers Shores; westbound on Gladiolus, near School St.; eastbound on Gladiolus, near Concourse Drive; entrance to Hunter Park, Pine Manor; and the entrance to the church at Pine Manor.
The first sign went up at 9 a.m. at Hunter Park in Pine Manor with Routte and Kim Swanson, Crime Prevention practioner with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and some members of the Department of Transportation on hand.
Will this latest move by Crime Stoppers help to fight crime?
Routte believes it will inasmuch as it will hopefully make more people aware of the organization.
