Join local group Photographic Expeditions for a day of practice and instruction using your digital camera. Spend the morning taking photos of two classic cars outside, then learn how to use Photoshop to edit your images in the afternoon. Bring your digital camera and laptop with Photoshop software to class. Registration is required.
– Book Discussion: I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot Down by the Taliban by Malala Yousafzai

This novel narrates the life of the young Pakistani student who advocated for women’s rights and education in the Taliban-controlled Swat Valley, survived an assassination attempt and became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Registration is requested.

Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet for your particular grade level at the Youth Services information desk. It is a great way to become familiar with different parts of the library and different collections. All those that complete the hunt can enter their name for a prize drawing.

Toddlers love activity and the chance to practice their growing language skills. This interactive and active time for toddlers and their favorite caregiver is designed to advance pre-reading and social skills. They will experience storytelling, wordplay, felt board stories, fingerplays, puppets, singing, music-making, socializing, dancing and, of course, books.

Children who start kindergarten with pre-reading skills have an advantage. They are ready to learn to read. Your preschooler will continue to build relationships with other kids, books and the library in a storytime designed specifically for them. The stories and activities are more complex, but just as fun.
– Baby Rhyme Time
10 a.m. Aug. 20 and 27
Reading to babies right from birth stimulates their minds, develops language skills and lays a foundation for later reading success. During this special storytime, you and your baby will learn new nursery rhymes and fingerplays, interact with puppets, sing, read books and dance. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents and babies in the neighborhood.

Five simple practices get kids ready to read “Talking, Singing, Reading, Writing and Playing.” Your whole family is invited to this enjoyable, all-ages storytime that encourages the development of pre-reading skills through songs, rhymes, fingerplays and stories.
