Airport recognized for 2015 Project of Year

The Florida Department of Transportation honored Southwest Florida International Airport with the 2015 Commercial Service Airport Project of the Year for its closed circuit television upgrades.

It was presented to the Lee County Port Authority, Kimley-Horn & Associates and Owen-Ames-Kimball Company at the Florida Airports Council Annual Conference in Boca Raton.

The Lee County Port Authority determined that upgrading the system would enhance the airport’s overall safety and security.

The project included identifying and installing additional cameras in the terminal and throughout the property, along with upgrades in functionality for existing cameras and the fiber optic cabling system.

In addition, technology updates were made to access control and video management software systems and the airport communications center.

This is the fifth time the airport has received the accolade.

Children’s Theatre presents ‘Aladdin Jr.’

Broadway Palm Children’s Theatre is transporting audiences on a magical journey with Disney’s “Aladdin Jr.” playing today and Aug. 7, 9, 11 and 14.

All of your favorite characters from the hit Disney film come to life on stage. Join Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, the Genie and more for an adventure filled with magic, mayhem and flying carpet rides.

You will hear favorite songs from the movie, such as “Prince Ali,” “Never Had A Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World.”

All performances begin with a buffet at noon and show time at 1 p.m. The chef’s special buffet includes favorites like chicken tenders, french fries, pasta and more.

Ticket prices for the buffet and the show are only $18 for all ages; group rates are available for parties of 20 or more.

Business Ethics Award deadline approaching

The deadline for applications for the 11th annual Business Ethics Award of the Uncommon Friends Foundation is Aug. 10.

In conjunction with the Florida Gulf Coast University, the award will be presented to a business that exemplifies the highest standards of ethical behavior in its dealings with both employees and its public.

The finalists will be honored at a special luncheon on Oct. 23; the winner will be revealed at the annual Uncommon Evening on Oct. 27 at the Burroughs Home & Gardens, at 2505 First St., Fort Myers.

Nominees from Southwest Florida’s five counties who consistently demonstrate a system-wide commitment to high business ethics are eligible. Anyone can nominate a company, including itself.

Applications and submission guidelines are available online at: www.uncommonfriends.org.

The foundation is seeking corporate sponsorships for the annual Uncommon Evening.

Individual tickets are also on sale at $125; seating is limited.

Broadway Palm seeks ‘hero’ nominations

Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is playing “Footloose” now through Aug. 15.

It is asking for the public’s help in nominating real-life heroes who have made a difference in the community for a summer campaign titled “Hero of the Week!”

Nominate a police officer, firefighter, EMT or someone serving in the military. It can even be a friend, family member or teacher who impacted someone’s life.

Nomination forms can be found online or at the box office.

One hero will be selected each week. Each hero will receive four tickets, including dinner, a shout out from the stage, a meet and greet with the cast and four souvenir glasses with a beverage of choice.

Performances are Wednesday through Sunday evenings, with selected matinees.

The Lee County Economic Development Office and the Horizon Council are accepting reservations for the 2015 Industry Appreciation Awards on Sept. 18 at 11:45 a.m. at the Harborside Event Center in the Fort Myers.

This year, the Horizon Council will honor businesses in four new categories:

– The LocalLee Grown Business Award will be awarded to a company that was founded in Lee County and is distinguished by its operational excellence and commitment to the vibrance of Southwest Florida’s business climate

– The Business Citizenship Award honors a company whose financial, volunteer and active involvement in organizations and programs have helped create a better quality of life in Lee County

– The Emerging Business Leader Award will be awarded to a relative newcomer to Lee County that is experiencing marked growth while introducing inventive products, services or business practices

– The Industry Luminary Award honors a company that helps shape its industry locally, nationally or even globally

‘Endless Summer’ adoption special

Lee County Domestic Animal Services is offering an “Endless Summer” special, featuring 50 percent off all adoptions with a donation of unopened dog or cat food for the Community Pet Pantry.

Dry dog and cat food, as well as pate’ variety canned cat food, is desperately needed.

All adoptions will still include the following services valued at over $500: spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, rabies vaccination and county license for pets over 3 months, 10-day pet health guarantee, microchip ID, feline leukemia and AIDS test for cats, heartworm test for dogs over 6 months, flea treatment, de-worming and behavior helpline.
