Bus stop safety tips
It is that time of year again. School has begun, and children are walking to and waiting at bus stops all around Lee County.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office wants to share some reminders to help keep children safe:
– When walking to the bus stop, it is best to walk in a group or with another friend.
– Watch for any strangers hanging around the bus stop either on foot, riding a bicycle or in a car. Tell an adult as soon as you can.
– If someone asks you to come over to them or wants to give you something, say no and tell an adult about it.
– If a stranger wants to talk to you or asks for directions, do not talk to them. Run away and tell an adult.
– Stay at least five giant steps away from the curb or road.
– If a stranger follows you while walking to or from the bus stop, get away from them as fast as you can, run quickly in the other direction and yell help in a loud voice
– If someone makes you uncomfortable even if you know them, tell your parents, teacher or another adult that you trust.
Encourage children to know their family name, address and phone number so they can give that to an adult if they need help.
