Trash talk: New trash bins to be dropped off all over
PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN New, trash bins to be dropped off at every home in Lehigh Acres.
The way trash, recyclable materials and yard trimmings will be picked up in Lehigh is about to change.
Beginning this week, Progressive Waste Solutions, the waste removal company that now picks up your trash cans and dumps them into the back of the truck, will be dropping off a new tan-colored trash bin, one for each house in the eastern part of Lee County, including all of Lehigh, Alva and Buckingham.
The public had an opportunity on Aug. 20 to view the new containers and trucks that will be changing the way trash is removed in Lehigh.
And effective Oct. 5, residents’ recycling and household garbage will all be collected on the same day that you now are having your garbage picked up.
That’s the word from Molly Schweers, solid waste coordinator with Lee County Solid Waste Division.
She said some 47,000, 95-gallon wheeled cars for this service area of Lehigh will be provided by Progressive Waste Solutions and are valued at around $3 million. She said smaller, wheeled carts will be provided for physically impaired customers.
But the big thing to remember, according to Schweers, is that all waste material in the area will now be collected on the same day of the week providing a more effective collection system.
On hand last Thursday scheduled to meet with the public was Jim Wheatley, Progressive Waste Solutions Government Affairs Manager for Southwest and Central Florida and Keith Howard, Lee County Solid Waste deputy director. They and staffers were there, too, to show the new containers and fleet of trucks to the public. Progressive is located at 5594 6th Street West in Lehigh, off of Leonard Blvd. North and 6th St. West.
Representatives for Progressive Waste Solutions, the contracted hauler for the area, estimate it will take six weeks to deliver all the carts.
“We’ll be working six days a week over the next six weeks to get these carts out,” Wheatley said.
Each household in Lehigh will receive one 95-gallon wheeled cart for placing garbage curbside. These carts are the property of Lee County.
Residents in eastern Lee County are being mailed information about the new collection program. It is being printed in three languages.
Progressive Waste Solutions officials say you may use your current garbage bins, which are owned by the resident, for overflow material of yard waste.
The service, which is paid through your taxes, will be more efficient, according to officials.
The public is also being asked to place their carts at the edge of their yard or curb with the arrow facing the street and keep the cart three feet from cans, mailboxes, recycling etc.
If there are residents who want a smaller wheeled garbage cart, they can call the waste pickup firm at 239-533-8000. Customer service can be reached at 239-368-2300.
The smaller, wheeled carts will be provided for physically impaired customers, officials said.
Wheatley, the manager for this area, said it would give customers who now put plastic bags out on their lawn a container to place them in. He said in some areas, the plastic bags outside a container on the ground are often torn apart by small animals such and dogs and cats that run loose.
If you are going to continue to use your old trash bins, remember that they have to be of the type that can be lifted up by mechanical arms on the new trucks, as will the new trash bins and the recycle bins.
The automated collection arm demonstrations were also shown to many customers last week. There are 20 trucks in the new fleet to mechanically empty the trash tubs and the firm serves Lehigh Monday to Friday with commercial pickup on Saturdays. No collections are made on Sundays.
