Be wary of fraudulent ‘cop’ calls, local authorities report

By Staff | Sep 2, 2015

Have you received a call from someone claiming to be with the Lee County “Police” Department or with the union associated with the “Lee County Police Department?”

Someone is calling our residents claiming to be with the “Lee County Police Department,” which is an agency that does not exist in Lee County.

They are asking parents a series of questions, including:

– How many people are in your household?

– When do the parents get home?

– When are the parents available to meet with the caller?

– How many children are in the household?

The caller’s goal is to make an appointment with the parent so they may fingerprint the child/children and take a swab of the child/children for DNA purposes.

They state that they will keep this information on file so if the child/children ever go missing this information will be on file.

If you receive a similar call – hang up.

This call is not from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

If you are not certain if the call is real or if you want to confirm what the caller is saying, call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office fraud line at (239) 258-3292 or the main number at (239) 477-1000.
