Several people recognized at fire board meeting
MEL TOADVINE Jason Dixon was honored.
A Lehigh Acres man, Jason Dixon, was honored by the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District last week for saving the life of a man a few weeks ago. The man’s vehicle plunged into a canal on Ann Avenue, and a neighbor saw it happen and jumped into action by jumping into the canal and breaking the window and pulling the driver out.
Dixon was cited for pulling the man out of the canal before EMTs arrived on the scene. The accident happened on Aug. 10.
According to reports, the accident happened at around 9:15 p.m. on a road where there were no streetlights. The driver, 26-year-old Dylan Fankhouser was trapped inside his car which was slowly filling with water.
Dixon punched at the window glass and finally shattered it causing a slight injury to his arm. Chief John Wayne presented Dixon with a special plaque.
Others in the fire department were honored too and are listed later in this story.

The meeting room of Station 104 of the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District was filled to capacity as several members of the fire district were honored for recognitions.
The regularly scheduled business meeting was short. The commissioners said okay to a request by Commissioner Matt Smith that the fire district’s minutes in the future reflect the names of people from the public who speak before the board. Smith had wanted a more detailed addition to the minutes about the subject matter and said it was important in his opinion that the minutes reflect a summary of what the public speaker was saying.
Attorney Richard Pringle said some agencies do this while others do not. Some remarks were made by Fire Chief Wayne that a verbatim tape is available to any member of the public who wants to hear it. He said having full details in the minutes could cause “grand standing” from some who speak before the group.
It was agreed upon through a motion that the minutes beginning at the next meeting this month include any names and a brief remark of what a member of the public had to say in a short disclosure. If they spoke before or against an agenda item, the report in the minutes would list their name and if they supported or did not support a certain item on the agenda.
Most of the meeting on the evening of Aug. 25 was devoted to recognitions of several firefighters and EMTs. Fire Chief John Wayne made the presentations with pins and plaques, each coming before the board and the public to receive the recognition.

Promotions Recognitions: Lt. Brooke Ricciardi, Lt. James Edinger, Engineer Lisa Gafford, Engineer Richard Rodriguez.
10-Year Pins through June 2015: Josh Golden, Brian Hughes, Michael Picciano, Jason Collins, Sarah Drake, and Eric Eccles.
Refreshments were enjoyed by all that attended during a recess of the meeting called by Chairman Larry Becker.
The fire board meets on the last Tuesday night of each month at the fire station on Sunshine and 16th Street.
Minutes of each meeting can be found on the website, as well as the agenda for future meetings. The agenda items appear on the site just a few days before the scheduled meeting. Minutes are not posted until they are approved during the next meeting.
