Two honored by chamber

The Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce honored two outstanding people in the community last week for different efforts for making a difference in Lehigh; one for saving the life of a toddler that may have drowned and the other for her outstanding work in the community for the new Lehigh Acres-MSID.

Had it not been for the outstanding efforts of a deputy who saved a small child that was found in a family pool on Aug. 14, it is likely that the child would have not survived a near drowning.

Because of her swift actions, Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy April Jackson was named Lee County Sheriff’s Deputy of the Month for August by the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting last week.

The Sheriff’s Office received a call about a toddler that was found in a family pool, not breathing, non-responsive, and blue.

Chamber guests were told that Jackson was the first on the scene and rushed to the pool area where the parents were doing everything they could to save the life of the child by attempting CPR.

Deputy Jackson took over direct control of the baby and began directing the CPR efforts.

Sheriff’s officials said the baby started coughing and making noise as Lehigh EMS arrived at the pool.

The baby was taken to Lehigh Regional Medical Center where it was treated and began to recover, chamber members were told.

Because of her swift response and actions, Lehigh Fire Rescue team responders said that without the swift life- saving actions of Jackson, the child would have been much less likely to survive.

She was giving a standing ovation by members of the chamber.

For Jackson’s creditable accomplishment during this incident, and her devotion to duty and service to the public, the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce is very proud to recognize Deputy April Jackson as Lee County Sheriff’s Office Deputy of the Month for August of 2015, said Inke Baker, president and CEO of the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber also presented an award for its Employee of the Month to Carla Brantley, a community project specialist with the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District (LA-MSID).

According to Chamber President Inke Baker, “Carla has really developed in her position over the last several years. She multitasks all day every day in her position as the community project specialist for the Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District. She came to the district with a bachelor’s degree in public relations from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in communications and advertising from Bond University in Australia.

During Brantley’s typical month, she writes news articles to be published in the local media, organizes staff and board events, administers the vehicle and equipment software, assembles a PDF-based board package, maintains the district’s website and fields calls from the community, among a million miscellaneous tasks that are too many to mention. Baker told chamber members.

Just recently Brantley has been deeply involved with name-changes issues at the district and she has been working with current chairman Nate Stout to organize the dedication ceremony for the Lehigh Acres MSID.

“In recognition of her dedication, the Lehigh Acres Community and the Greater Lehigh Acres Chamber of Commerce are proud to recognize Carla Brantley of Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District as our Employee of the Month for August, 2015, Baker said.
