Musicians wanted
The Lehigh Concert Band has started rehearsing for the 2015-16 season and invites all concert band musicians to come and sit in one of our rehearsals. We need clarinets, trumpets, trombones, tubas, and other instrumentalists to fill out the band. Some of the music we will be playing this season include Highlights from the Jersey Boys, John Williams Midway march, Lord of the Dance, English Folk Song Suite, Blues Brother’s Revue, Lion King, Genius of Ray Charles, Bond, James Bond, Raiders of the Lost Ark theme, Christmas in the German mountains, Fireside Christmas, Trumpets Ol, Fantasy on American Sailing Ships, Music for a Darkened Theatre, Stevie Wonder in Concert, Stars and Stripes, some swing, some blues, some classics, and many more. The band will record the March concert for a CD.
Rehearsals are at 7:00 P.M. in the annex of Faith Lutheran Church, 705 Leeland Heights Blvd. Lehigh Acres. If you perform at a senior high school level, college level or above we have a spot for you. Arts of the Inland Writer wins award
In August, the Florida Authors and Publishers Association gave out its prestigious annual President’s Awards for the best books of 2014 and the first half of 2015 by authors and publishers throughout the United States. In the category of spirituality and inspiration, Dr. Carol Kennedy received a silver medal for her book, A TASTE OF CHOCOLATE FOR THE SOUL. The event, which took place at the Hilton Orlando/Buena Vista Resort, recognized outstanding books by awarding gold and silver medals in categories ranging from children’s books to adult books.
President Mark Wayne Adams said, “The 2015 award winners elevate publishing both regionally and nationally. The awards continue to command the attention of industry professionals and readers!”
Dr. Kennedy has also written:

– The 15 Minute Guide to Parenting
– The Grief Monster.

Collecting coupons and box tops
Lehigh Acres American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 323 is collecting manufacturers’ coupons. We collect this coupons to send the commissaries overseas to help our servicemen and women with their grocery needs. Our National Security chairman, Nicole Jaster, clips these coupons, and sends them to a different commissary overseas. The commissaries then put the coupons out for our military to use. This helps save them money on their groceries. We have gotten several letters thanking us for sending these coupons.
Loretta Nolen, Education Chairman is also collection Box Tops for Education. We give these to the schools in Lehigh Acres to help them obtain items they may not be able to get otherwise.
If you would like to bring coupons or box tops to our Post, we have a box inside the side entrance to the Post, 1124 Ashlar Avenue. Please put your name and address inside the coupons or box tops you bring, so we may send you a thank you note. We thank you for your help with this project.

Karen Harty, Edible Gardening Adviser for Grow A Gardener Inc. and Lee County Master Gardener, will be presenting a class on “Veggie Gardening in Containers” at the Edible Gardening Exchange. Karen runs many edible gardening classes and workshops throughout both Lee and Hendry Counties and grows the majority of her own food for her family. Learn from her mistakes and start growing food on your lanai.
Come join other edible gardeners on Thursday, October 15 at 6:30pm at the North Fort Myers Rec Center located at 2000 N Recreation Park Way in North Fort Myers. The meeting starts at 6:30pm, but arrive early for an informal edible gardening chat that starts at 5:30pm. Bring your own coffee cup for free coffee and tea. Consider bringing something to share with everyone.
The Exchange meets the third Thursday of the month. Membership through March is $10 plus a $10 Lee Parks and Rec lifetime membership card is required. “Veggie Gardening in Containers” will run approximately 1 hour with time afterward for questions and answers. Free autism screening for young children
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.
The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Oct. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Lee County Regional Library, 881 Gunnery Road, Lehigh Acres.
It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.
Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make
The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.

Fair at Fenway South returns to JetBlue Park in November
The Fair at Fenway South returns to JetBlue Park for three big weekends in November.
The fair will open weekends from Nov. 6 to 22 at JetBlue Park, located at 11500 Fenway South Drive in Fort Myers, from 5 to 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and from 1 to 11:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
An exhibit new to the fair in 2015, the Kangaroo Experience is a collection of kangaroos on display where there will be several opportunities each day to learn more about the kangaroos and meet them up close and personal.
Award-wining Illusionist Lance Gifford, who has toured much of the U.S. and Canada, will amaze fairgoers at Fenway South with his fast-paced and highly entertaining magical illusion show. He and his company perform some of the world’s most amazing illusions including the “Metamorphosis,” once performed by the late great Harry Houdini. Some of the “family members” in his troupe include doves, rabbits, a chow chow, toy and standard poodles, a Macaw parrot and Burmese python snakes. Gifford’s show can be seen live at the fair several times each day.
On Friday and Saturday nights at 10, the Las Vegas hypnotist show will make believers of the audience, as the hypnotist persuades a man to dance like Beyonc, convinces fairgoers it’s sunny at night and more.
Another crowd favorite is the Banana Derby, a race where monkeys dressed in jockey outfits race on trained dogs around a track. Fairgoers may even meet the monkeys up close for photo opportunities after the races, which are held several times each day.
The fair also features a large petting zoo and exotic animal exhibit where attendees may observe lemurs, exotic birds, monkeys and dozens of creatures normally only found in the best zoos in the U.S. This attraction is open during all fair hours.
All live entertainment and shows are free with fair admission.
Wade Shows, one of the largest carnival companies in North America, will be bringing its rides and attractions to the midway at the event. Many of the fair’s rides appear each year at the Florida State Fair and are being brought exclusively to Fort Myers by the producers of the event, including plenty of rides for younger kids to enjoy.
Admission to the fair is as low as $3.50 per person with a two-for-one admission discount available at www.fairatfenway.com. Pay-One-Price unlimited rides wristbands are also available at a discount through the website before the start of the fair for $20 each. Individual ride tickets may also be purchased at the event.
