Joint operation conducted
Lee County deputies were out again to protect your credit card information from would-be thieves.
In an effort to crack down on fraudsters, who steal credit card information, utilizing illegal skimming devices, detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Unit, joined by investigators from the Department of Agriculture and the Cape Coral Police Department, recently conducted a joint operation.
The focus of the operation was to inspect gas station pumps, throughout Lee County, and intercept any illegal skimming devices. Thieves steal unsuspecting victim’s credit card information which they then use to make illegal purchases, costing victims hundreds and thousands of dollars.
Ninety four stations were inspected and no skimming devices were located.
The inspections are a continuation of the joint efforts from law enforcement to intercept any illegal skimming devices.
Detectives would like to remind would-be skimmers that they are working with local businesses to help prevent such illegal activity in the future. The results of the operation demonstrate that the partnerships, combined with increased security features on local gas pumps, are helping to reduce fraud in Lee.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is committed to taking a proactive stance to protect the county’s citizens by continued efforts such as operations like this.
Anyone having information on persons engaged in illegal activity is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 780-TIPS (8477) or visit: www.swflcrimestoppers.org and remain anonymous, with cash rewards up to $1,000.
