Bomb threat evacuates school

By Staff | Oct 21, 2015

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers is asking for the public’s help identifying yet another individual who made a bomb threat at a Lee County high school.

At about 8:30 a.m. Oct. 12, school officials at East Lee County High School, at 715 Thomas Sherwin Ave., were notified that an unknown individual had left a written message on a partition in the boy’s bathroom that there was a bomb in the school.

Administrators quickly evacuated more than 1,500 students, while Lee County deputies searched the building. Once it was cleared, students were allowed back inside.

“This is the third time in a week that a bomb threat has been made at a Lee County high school,” Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers coordinator, said. “We have no information that any of these incidents are related, however this is a prime learning moment for students who may not realize the consequences of their actions. Bomb threats are felony offenses, and felony offenses don’t go away easily. They will remain when it comes time to apply for jobs and college applications. So what may be perceived as ‘just a joke’ today can have long lasting consequences.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 780-TIPS (8477). Callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
