Lee Boulevard crash kills one
A Lehigh Acres man died as a result of a five-vehicle crash on Oct. 14 in the 2700 block of Lee Boulevard, in the area of the Taco Bell. The crash caused the six lanes of Lee Boulevard to be closed overnight, reopening Thursday morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol, which investigated the accident, said Daniel A. Gold, 26, of Lehigh, died in the crash that occurred sometime around 9:30 p.m.
Police said he was driving a dark colored Cherokee Jeep which was traveling west on Lee Boulevard, west of Elva Avenue. Police said Gold’s Jeep went off the highway on the right and the front of the Jeep struck the curb, traveling over the sidewalk and off Lee Boulevard.
The Jeep then struck a utility pole on the north side of the road to the right leaving it split in half with power lines falling on the vehicle behind, causing four vehicles to become involved in the accident.
The Jeep then continued west and traveled down an embankment and through shrubs in front of 2710 Lee Blvd., then continued across the driveway access for 2710 Lee Blvd., and hit the mailboxes there and at 2714 Lee Blvd.
Police said the Jeep still continued westbound and the front of the vehicle then struck a tree near the entrance to the parking lot at 2714 Lee Blvd.
The Jeep rotated counterclockwise around the tree and finally came to a stop facing south in the parking of 2714 Lee Blvd.
After striking the pole and cutting it in half, power lines fell across the road and four vehicles behind the Jeep became involved. The fifth vehicle swerved and the front of that vehicle struck the curb on the north shoulder of Lee Blvd.
Gold was pulled from the wreckage by the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue District which transported him to Lehigh Regional Medical Center, where he died, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
An updated report Thursday noted that it was unknown if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
All traffic had to be re-routed, and the road was not re-opened until Thursday morning.
Why the Jeep went off Lee Blvd. has not been determined. The investigation is continuing.
