Red Cross, Lehigh fire department partner up to install smoke alarms
Florida’s Southern Gulf Red Cross Chapter continued its Home Fire Preparedness Campaign in Lehigh Acres this month.
Red Cross volunteers and Lehigh Acres Fire Control & Rescue installed 153 smoke alarms free of charge to residents.
The initiative aims to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by as much as 25 percent in the next five years.
Smoke alarm installation is critical to reducing home fire deaths.
During the installations, volunteers provided fire prevention tips and assisted residents in practicing fire escape plans.
Homes on Pinewood Boulevard, Aztec Lily Lane, Dawn Flower Circle, Desert Candle Circle, Health Aster Lane and Dutch Iris Lane were targeted.
The Red Cross is asking every household in America to take two simple steps that can save lives: checking or installing smoke alarms and practicing fire drills.
Research by the National Fire Protection Association indicates that working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half.
Despite this compelling evidence, the need for smoke alarms remains great.
The Vision 20/20 project – a prevention initiative of the Institution of Fire Engineers, U.S. Branch -?estimates a need for more than 100 million smoke alarms in U.S. homes today, according to Bernadette Jay, regional communication and marking program manager with the American Red Cross.
