Special meeting set to probe agency’s new planning power
The Lehigh Acres Municipal Services Improvement District (LA-MSID) Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 5 p.m., an hour prior to its regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 16, to provide a forum to discuss the potential future planning powers outlined in the agency’s recently new legislation. The meeting will be held at the LA-MSID Office at 601 East County Lane in Lehigh Acres.
All those interested in the issues in Lehigh Acres are invited to attend.
Lehigh Acres MSID is a multi-county Chapter 189 District created by the state to provide drainage and flood control; conservation and mitigation; irrigation; navigation services to Lehigh and potentially other powers. The agency was created on Wednesday, June 10, when Gov. Rick Scott signed (HB1255) Chapter 2015-202 into law. This action transferred all of the special acts, property, obligations, and liabilities of the 57-year-old, East County Water Control District (ECWCD) to the newly created Lehigh Acres MSID.
In its enabling legislation, Lehigh Acres MSID was afforded powers to study in five limited areas: sidewalks, street lights, and community signage, local planning and water and sewer services. The potential for additional powers is not automatic. Lehigh Acres MSID must first enter into an agreement with Lee County and then present the community with a referendum vote.
During the Nov. 16 special meeting, the board of commissioners will hear information regarding planning powers.
The regular meeting of the board will be held at 6 p.m. following the special meeting.
