School board members earn state distinction

The distinction of “Master Board” was awarded to the Lee County School District leadership team by the Florida School Boards Association on Dec. 2 at the 70th Annual Joint Conference in Tampa.

Lee County is one of 17 districts in Florida to hold the award.

The Master Board Program is a voluntary program which provides opportunities for the leadership team to engage in training that enhances its capacity to provide visionary leadership for the district.

It concentrates on the team’s governance roles for enhancing student achievement, fostering connections and empowering collaboration between schools and the community, and creating a learning organization to advance excellence in public education.

The members of the leadership team included Mary Fisher, Jeanne Dozier, Cathleen O’Daniel Morgan and Pamela LaRiviere.

District presents annual Sounds of the Season

Lee County Public Schools presents the upcoming 4th Annual Sounds of the Season.

It is a made-for-television student performance showcase spotlighting fine arts programs from around the district.

Sounds of the Season will feature 19 schools performing more than 60 holiday favorites.

The winners from the district’s annual holiday greeting card contest will also be featured.

To watch, tune in on:

– Lee Schools TV (Comcast Channel 99): Today, Dec. 16, through Dec. 28 at 10 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

LAMS?band, chorus set performance

The Lehigh Acres Middle School Band and Chorus will perform on the following dates:

– Dec. 17: Band and chorus in the school cafeteria, at 104 Arthur Ave., at 6 p.m. Free for public.

Legion Auxiliary taking applications

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 323 are accepting applications from students interested in attending Florida Girls State.

It is open to juniors at Lehigh Senior High School and East Lee County High School who will be seniors in the fall of 2016.

Florida Girls State is a hands-on weeklong educational workshop, focusing on Americanism and political process.

The goal is to help students better understand democratic ideals and the part individuals play in carrying out those ideals.

Participants become citizens of and participate in creating a mythical state of Seminole. The state is divided into 12 cities, six counties and the citizens, assigned to either the Nationalist or Federalist Party.

As the government begins to take shape, the participants come to understand their roles in a democratic society.

There are eligibility requirements and a selection process to become a Girls State delegate.

Lehigh High students can contact their counselor; East Lee students can contact George Becker or Sgt. William Roseberry.

Applications due by Jan. 4.

Open enrollment period to begin for students

The Student Assignment Open Enrollment Period for the 2016-17 year will begin Jan. 11 and will run through April 1.

The period is for:

– Any student entering kindergarten, sixth grate or ninth grade

– Students who are new to the district

– Currently enrolled students who would like to change schools

On Jan. 8, pre-printed applications will be mailed to parents of pre-K students attending the Lee County Public Schools, as well as fifth- and eighth-grade students.

The applications will not be provided to new students in the district or students currently attending a charter school.

If families received a pre-printed application, they are strongly encouraged to apply online via the district’s website.

Parents of children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 should apply for kindergarten; parents need to register even if they have an older child in school.

The following Student Assignment locations will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for parents to register children for school:

– Cape Coral Office, 370 N. Santa Barbara Blvd., Cape Coral

– Fort Myers Office, 2855 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers

– Lehigh Acres Office, 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207
