Annual ‘Shop with a Sheriff’ events held in Lehigh, Bonita

By Staff | Dec 31, 2015

Underprivileged children in Bonita Springs and Lehigh Acres will have an extra reason to smile this holiday season, thanks to donations from local businesses.

Last week, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Bonita Springs Community Policing Unit and Lehigh Acres Bravo District hosted the annual “Shop with a Sheriff” event.

In Lehigh Acres, students at G. Weaver Hipps Elementary were chosen by staff based upon their needs. The school chose seven families; with 17 children total for the event.

In addition to the shopping spree, families were also given a turkey, ham, and fresh vegetables.

Sponsors for the event include Boar’s Head, Chick-Fil-A, Lee County Explorers Post 19, Lehigh Acres Community Initiative, Nations Association, Pay It Forward Lehigh Acres, SWFL Produce, Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie.

In Bonita Springs, students participated in a Christmas essay contest. The winners of the contest were selected based on the content, grammar and spelling of their work

The contest yielded 22 winners. The children were taken to “shop with a sheriff” at the Target at Coconut Point to pick out toys for themselves and their family.

Sponsors for the event include American Legion Auxiliary Post 303, American Legion Post 303, Bonita Springs Assistance Office, Bonita Springs Elementary School, Bonita Springs-Estero Association of Realtors, City of Bonita Springs, Cube Smart, Shikany’s Funeral Home, Spring Creek Elementary and Target at Coconut Point.

We are so thankful for all the generous sponsors that donated toys, food and money to help these children and families have a special holiday season.
